Artwork One
Title: Herdwick ewe and lamb
Materials and Techniques: The fleece used in this picture is from a neighbour’s Herdwick sheep. Techniques used are: skirting; cold soaking; hot washing, drying; wet felting; needle felting the background using dyed fleece; cutting out the ears and faces; needle felting the details in the ears and faces; assembling the elements.
Inspiration: ‘Time’ is represented in two ways: the time-consuming processes undertaken to create this piece and the transformation of a black Herdwick lamb into grey adult. The lamb’s face turns white during the first year. The adult grey coat develops in the second year and lightens as the sheep matures.
Art Work Two
Title: Autumn Reflections
Materials and Techniques: I dyed Bluefaced Leicester locks from a neighbour’s sheep in autumn colours for this needle felted picture of Ullswater in autumn. The felt rocks were made with Herdwick and the dark shadows are Zwartbles. The lustre on the water is created using bamboo and silk fibres.
Inspiration: Time is made visible in autumn, the turning point of the year, when growth slows and nutrients in the trees’ leaves are reabsorbed causing them to change colour and fall. It is my favourite season and often thought of as a time for reflection, hence the title of the piece: Autumn Reflections.
