Artwork One

Title: Moon Pal

Materials and Techniques: I needle felted the hare with Core wool creating a pure white sculptured hare. To add detail I used browns and variated mixes of hare colours comprised of Merino, Shetland and Corriedale wool. Grey Swaledale wool was incorporated to depict tiny sketchy lines upon the Pelt. Mixtures of colours of finger carded wool was folded and cut at the fold, to give depth to the layers of the pelt. I made a wire armature to support the branches. And wound Shetland wool around them before needle felting the branches and lichen with green and brown roving. The knotty burrs comprised of blue faced Leicester staples were needle felted into green lichen pockets to give texture to the branches. The wet felted leaves were added to enhance the scene.

Inspiration:

In Celtic tradition hares are thought to gaze at the moon goddess appearing on the face of the full moon. Her light is thought to empower hares to symbolise rebirth and fertility. Celtic moon hares haves many names, mine is called Moon Pal.
