Artwork One
Title: Ammonites
Materials and Techniques: I cut a length of wire and wrapped it with Merino wool forming a sphere. Next I wound cotton around the sphere to imitate the indents of the fossils. I wound the sphere into a spiral shaped shell. I covered the shell with grey and fawn coloured Correidale wool. During the needle felting process I used one needle to gently shape the shell. The sea and sky were needle felted using ocean coloured Merino wool. I embellished the ocean with vibrant strands of Cerulean blue Tussah silk. The waves were created with Nylon fibres. To add texture to the sand I placed naturally dyed Blue faced Leicester staples upon brown Corriedale wool fibres.
Inspiration: Fossils speak so much about the creatures they have been. They contain, represent and hold a time span which brings a deep elemental connection to reality. Ammonites bring breeze and energise our inner beings. Their organic remains ossify our bones, and strengthen the evolution of our oceans.
Artwork Two
Title: Marine Mollusc
Materials and Techniques: To make the tentacles I fused with wire six lengths of wire to a circle, which looked like a set of keys. I wrapped Grey Merino wool around the lengths and needle felted the head. Next I attached the head to the prepared shell. The shell was made by using the same techniques used to make the Ammonites. The background was needle felted with ocean coloured Merino wool and Tussah silk.
Inspiration: Time to me is recorded and recreated by human responses to observations. Marine Molluscs swam upside down and lived on the surface of the ocean. As they grew they spiralled down to the bottom. Their unique form and buoyancy is rare and their untamed powers bring a wild primal magic to our connections with the ocean.
