Title: The Passage of Time
Materials and Techniques: Materials include Corriedale and Bergschaf fibres, silk fabrics, wallpaper, Tyvek paper and embroidery threads. Techniques used include wet felting, Nuno felting, painting, hand and machine embroidery.
Inspiration: The Passage of Time was inspired by the beautiful markings in the sandstone slabs that can be seen on the beach at Seahouses in Northumberland. Corriedale and Bergschaf fibres have been wet felted to create the base slab which was then embellished with machine and hand embroidery. The cut out reveals a layer of fossils beneath.
We can think of fossils as timestamps in rock formations, providing us with a record of the creatures, and where they lived, thousands, sometimes millions, of years ago.
The rocks themselves have been created by the very slow process of sedimentation, building up the many layers over a very lengthy period of time. The erosion of these rocks can be seen as the slow ticking of the clock that shapes what we see today.
