RIBBON OF HIGHWAY EXHIBIT

Every August, the Northeast Feltmakers Guild holds a felting challenge. The challenge for 2024 was Ribbon of Highway. “Ribbon of Highway” is a phrase from the famous song This Land is Your Land” by the iconic American folksinger Woody Guthrie, and inspires many images.

Each member wanting to participate received a piece of charcoal-colored cotton gauze with the stipulation that it must run from one vertical side of the piece to the other and that it be 2” wide at both edges. Works were to be unframed with a size no larger than 18” X 24”, either vertical or horizontal.

The plan was to have an exhibit with the finished pieces where each piece is hung so that the ribbon of highway creates a single line running through the entire exhibit.

THE SHOW INSTALLATION

In October, the show was hung at the Environmental Education Center at Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The EEC is an attractive and busy facility with many beautiful trails and programs, and people visit indoors and out, all day long. Several guild members came to help the Outreach Committee with the hanging and it was a reunion of sorts for some old friends. The art was secured to the grid walls using zip ties and clips. It went quickly with so many hands.

At last the show was hung, along with labels, a beautiful NEFG banner and information via QR code, framed in felt. A large table was also set up with the felt squares we created at the retreat last April, exploring the theme of connection. Each of the squares contain lines as design elements, which enter and exit at the same place on each, so no matter how the tiles are arranged, these lines connect with one another. This project is another way we remember our friend Nancy Kavanagh, and the importance of connection with each other in the guild.
