DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will explore the sculptural potential of felt through the development of hollow forms. \nYou will learn how to build volume using a resist\, gaining control over shape and structure from the inside out. Through an in-depth exploration of differential shrinkage and directional fulling\, you will discover how density\, fiber placement\, and movement can dramatically influence form. \nWe will also experiment with gum arabic and steam curing techniques to refine\, strengthen\, and enhance the final surface and structural presence of your felt pieces. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have expanded your technical skills and developed new ways of thinking about sculptural form in felt.

SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's 4 day Sculpting Hollow Forms with Extreme Differential Shrinkage
DESCRIPTION:Learn technique for layout/wrapping of various 2D resist template shapes in a consistent thinness of wool fiber while simultaneously integrating distinct areas of denser partial felt shapes to explore extreme differential shrinkage as a means of sculpting surface relief and unique hollow form. Participants will make partially felted sheets of fiber from varying thicknesses and states of structural integrity to cut and apply strategically in their fiber layout. Studies will focus on perimetral agitation to raise form from a single 2D plane\, sculpt a variety of hollow forms from a circular template and expand on possibilities with altered template shapes. Proper fulling\, the thickness of the wall in relationship to its surface area and interior volume and the amount of and placement of denser areas of partial felt as structural support will determine the forms integrity. Hand stitched structural ribbing\, steam blocking and shellac stiffening will be addressed to further refine the form’s posture and presence.

A place where unfinished work is welcome\, uncertainty is productive\, and play is taken seriously. A place designed to help you move your felt work forward with confidence and clarity.\nThis Open Lab supports you in resolving unfinished work\, strengthening sculptural decisions\, and deepening your understanding of form\, structure\, and surface. You bring the work; together we identify what it needs next.\nThe Lab offers dedicated studio time\, access to equipment\, professional insight\, and a supportive peer environment. It is ideal if you are already working on your own felt sculpture\, mask\, or other 3D felted form and need space to focus\, alongside experienced guidance when questions arise.\nBring your unfinished or unresolved sculptural projects—especially those that have left you stuck\, frustrated\, or unsure how to proceed—and we will work through them together. DESCRIPTION:Judit Tóth-Pócs offers an immersive workshop focused on three-dimensional felting techniques. Drawing on extensive sculptural experimentation\, she has developed a distinctive approach that combines felt with a variety of materials to enrich texture and form. \nThis course invites participants to explore the creation of different hat forms — folded ornamental hats\, flat caps\, bohemian caps\, hoods\, and hats embellished with pleated silk — while experimenting with the qualities and behavior of local wools in 3D felting. \nThrough the development of samples\, participants will learn how to design and structure a project\, selecting appropriate fibers\, resists\, and techniques. The aim is to build an independent working method\, enabling participants to plan and carry out future textile projects in line with artistic or functional goals.
