SUMMARY:SCULPTURAL WALLHANGINGS – NATURE AS INSPIRATION AND TEACHER
DESCRIPTION:at Atelier La Couech\, Montbrun-Bocage\, FRANCE \nIn nature we can find a variety of beautiful forms and structures that can serve as an inspiration and starting point for felt art. In addition\, we can observe interesting and efficient architectural\nsolutions that nature has found to create stability. These basic principles of statics play an important role in the planning and creation of a 3-dimensional felt object\, too!\nIn this workshop we will go together trough the entire process of creating a sculptural wallhanging: from the idea (or inspiration) to the finished object. The challenge will be\, to find a practicable way to transform your natural model into a textile object. Step by step\, you will develop your general design\, choose suitable materials\, plan the initial layout\, position of components and shape and arrangement of resists and find technical solutions for specific details.\nDuring an experimental phase\, day 1 – 3\, we will explore various possibilities of creating 3-dimensional felted forms\, in order to draw your attention to the important aspects of the techniques\, expand your knowledge and provide you with a pool of technical possibilties.\nDay 4 you will have a day off for relaxing\, collecting ideas\, planning your individual project and/or continue experimenting individually. For inspiration\, you may want to dive into Krystel’s wonderful textile library!\nDay 5-7 is dedicated to the realization of your individual projects. Based on many years of experience and skills in sculptural felting I will give advice and support with choosing suitable techniques and guide you through the felting process.\nTogether we will discuss how to proceed with the different steps of layout and felting process and which details need special attention. As each student would work on a personal project\, the group can learn from a variety of versions and different technical aspects that might be implied.\nAtelier du Bocage\, in its co-working space\, offers a 3m wide electric felt rolling machine which can be used to help us fulling large pieces of felt.\nI’m looking forward to an exciting week of experimentation and felt art\, where we can unite and expand our ideas\, experience and creative skills! \n(students should be familiar with the foundations of felting\, some experience of felting with resists can be helpful)

SUMMARY:Design and production of a tailor-made jacket
DESCRIPTION:A unique jacket is designed for a unique body inhabited by a woman who enjoys feeling unique when wearing it\, because it fits her perfectly\, because it seems “made for her”. A felt jacket is a wearable sculpture. \nThis workshop is designed for people already experienced in basic wool felt making techniques. It will allow them to design and create a jacket\, in seamless\, reversible wool felt\, designed in harmony with their silhouette\, while using certain techniques from sewing codes.

SUMMARY:TREE BARKS IN FELT with GLADYS PAULUS
DESCRIPTION:This 4-day workshop looks to the world of trees as a starng point for exploring textures\, surface relief and experimental layering. There are thought to be 73\,000 tree species globally\, among which 9\,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. \nWith such a huge inspiraon source\, there are years of inspiraon ahead for any arst/designer. For this workshop however\, we’ll have to narrow it down to 1 or 2 tree species! We’ll study these thoroughly\, and explore ways and techniques to translate their beauty into felt.

SUMMARY:GLADYS PAULUS: SAMPLES: A LIBRARY OF IDEAS 5 days workshop October 03 to 07\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:During this workshop\, you will make a series of 2-D felt pieces from which small samples (approximately 15 x 15cm) are selected. These will form the jumping off point for a deeper exploration of felt making techniques and effects\, as well as contrast and composition\, and become the basis for a very personal line of inquiry. This workshop is not about achieving a particular outcome\, but rather about the joy of responding in the moment and learning through play\, trial and “error”. It is intended to give you the freedom and time to explore\, experiment that is so often lacking in our daily life\, and to deepen your understanding of the medium. You will develop the beginnings of a reference library of techniques and ideas to enable future projects\, which can continue to grow at home. A wide range of materials may be incorporated into the samples\, and you will be encouraged to think outside the box.

SUMMARY:“Discovery through Felt ”( 1/2) Sculptural Felting Workshop MARJOLEIN DALLINGA
DESCRIPTION:Join the trainer MARJOLEIN DALLINGA\, from May 09 to May 15 2024 for a 7 days spring residence in the south of France : a manual wool felt session in two parts.\nYou don’t create art\, it already exist\, you have to let it come to you\, going where art is instead of you creating it\, Take action based on your excitement\, with no attachment to the outcome\nIt is from the dance of conflicting emotions that creativity and art are born. Though sculpture is usually perceived as static I see it more as movement\, the movement of wool from fibers into felt.\nAnd as long as there is movement there is life.\nThis 6-day workshop is a discovery journey filled with many experiences of modeling different wools and other fibers. We will explore different techniques for sculptural form ideas\, with themes like: folding and unfolding\, building relief\, clamping and binding. All to become more aware of how and why we want to use this medium. This workshop is inspired by the idea that we have to allow ourselves to discover new ways of creating with wool. Let the wool make you feel things\, and then decide if it is any good. \nfULL RESIDENCE ON SITE IS AVAILIABLE

SUMMARY:DAGMAR BINDER Seamless waistcoats with 3d structures or multiple collars (Montbrun\, Oct 30–Nov 1\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:After some years\, 3d sculptural waistcoats are back to Montbrun-Bocage.. You will have a new chance to learn more about felting a seamless and well-fitting garment\, a waistcoat (or\, if you are are an advanced and quick felter… you may even think of adding sleeves for a jacket).\nWe will have a close look at how fibre direction and combination of materials would influence consistency\, shape and flexibility of a felt. This way you will be more aware of these aspects while\nplanning your vest design.\nFelting a sample of the wool types of your choice you can calculate shrinkage and develop a pattern for your individual size. Around this template you will start laying out fibres for the seamless body of\nyour vest and only after that (if you like the idea…) add 3d structures or other additional elements\, like extra collars\, surface structures\, pockets etc.\nAfter completing the layout\, your garment will be prefelted by rubbing and rolling until all elements are well connected\, then resists can be removed\, the waistcoat shaped 3-dimensionally and final\ndetails accentuated by hand.

SUMMARY:FELTING WITH GLADYS PAULUS in the South of France 6 DAYS WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:INTRODUCTION TO MAKING ANIMAL MASKS – THE BASICS (LEVEL 1) September 25 to 30\n 5 days\, 1 day off\n•Type: Advanced workshop\n•Level: Advanced\nIn this advanced workshop\, students are guided through the basic principles and techniques of felting an animal mask\, step by step\, from start to finish\, using a relatively uncomplicated animal as their starting point. The focus is less on achieving a hyper-realistic and hyper detailed mask of the type created in master classes\, and more on achieving a thorough understanding of the different aspects involved in the process\, and on executing each stage well. The sculpting aspect is something that many find difficult and daunting\, as it requires more than just a knowledge of felt making. By focusing on relatively “simple” animal shapes\, we spend less time on intricate surface details\, complex technical feats\, or wide variety of embellishments\, and more time on learning how to achieve strong and convincing sculptural shapes\nThis advanced workshop is aimed at those who would like to gain a thorough understanding of how to make a full head cover animal mask\, but who are not yet ready to make overly complex and detailed pieces. This workshop is an excellent prelude to those who wish to progress to the Faces of Extinction master class in future.\n Learning is supported through practical demonstrations\, one-to-one consultations and practical help\, handouts and illustrated explanations.\n DAY 1: Shrinkage / designing & preparing the resist / laying out 1 & 2\nDAY 2: Eyes / laying out 3 & 4\nDAY 3: Attachments /laying out 5 & 6 /fur\, hair\nDAY 4: Felting / sculpting\nDAY 5: Sculpting / finishes\nMore information at atelierdubocage31@gmail.com

SUMMARY:FELTING WITH GLADYS PAULUS in the South of FRANCE 5 days workshop September 18 to 22\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:SAMPLES: A LIBRARY OF IDEAS\n 5 days\n•	Type: workshop\n•	Level: Intermediate\nDuring this workshop\, you will make a series of 2-D felt pieces from which small samples (approximately 15 x 15cm) are selected. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a 3-D sculpting workshop! While some 3-D elements may be incorporated on the surface of the felt\, we will be focussing on the creation of 2-D samples ONLY.\nWhether a felt maker preparing for a specific project or body of work\, or a felt maker who simply would like to explore textures and techniques through some experimental play\, this workshop aims to help you get started on what may well become a life-long addiction. The contents of this workshop are flexible and will be tailored to the students. Students are expected to come with an open mind and experimental attitude. Learning is supported through practical demonstrations and illustrated explanations. \nCOURSE OUTLINE\nDAY 1 Group work: Starting out\, pre-felts\, fabrics\, textures\, contrast.\nDAY 2 Group work: Framing & selecting\, zooming in\, following an inquiry.\nDAY 3 Individual inquiry\nDAY 4 Individual inquiry\nDAY 5 Individual inquiry continued\, show & tell\, closing.\n More information at atelierdubocage31@gmail.com

SUMMARY:FELTING WITH GLADYS PAULUS in the South of FRANCE
DESCRIPTION:COLOUR PLAY: September 13 to 15\, 2023\nCOLLAGE\, CONTRAST\, SHADE\, BLENDING & LAYERING TECHNIQUES\n•	3 days\n•	Type: workshop\n•	Level: Beginner/Intermediate\nDyed wool for felting is available in such a rich array of colours these days\, it is tempting to buy every colour under the sun! But this can be a bit like opening Pandora’s box… This workshop is aimed at the felt maker who would like to learn more about the way colours interact with each other\, who lacks confidence in how to achieve seamless colour graduation\, and/or lacks knowledge in how to build up colour throughout the layers. This workshop aims to grow your confidence with both colour and fibre in a playful way\nPRACTICAL LEARNING; Over 3 days of experimentation\, you will learn the basics of colour theory\, the ways fibres can be mixed and layered\, how we can make colours ‘sing’\, or how to tone them down. We will experiment with colour schemes\, and through the use of pre-felt collage and selective framing processes\, we move toward the creation of a series of swatches\, with a particular focus on composition and dynamic surface/line/colour contrast\, which may incorporate fabrics & textures. The workshop will culminate in a short show & tell\, and you will leave with a panel of colour ‘sketches’ that can form the basis for a large work (such as wall hangings\, rugs or surface decoration on a sculptural piece) to make at home.\nLearning is supported through practical demonstrations\, handouts and illustrated explanations.\nAsk for more information at atelierdubocage31@gmail.com

SUMMARY:“Discovery through Felt ”( 1/2) Sculptural Felting Workshop Marjolein Dallinga
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a discovery journey filled with many experiences of modeling different wools and other fibers. We will play with the processes of shortening\, thickening\, tightening\, shrinking and other transformations of felted surfaces.\nFocus will be on how color changes in the felting process and how different layouts and felting methods change forms and shapes.\nSome felting experience required .
