Dianne Standen

Business name: Creative Textiles
After a career in community and education projects I began full time textile work in 1996. Shortly after that I moved to Cumbria and since then my work has been inspired by the Lake District landscape and the Cumbrian Coast. It was a fascination with colour and texture that led me to work with textiles. From an early interest in fabric, threads and construction I moved on to focus on feltmaking and then to combine that with textile and fibre recycling techniques. I now have a wide experience in different techniques which I often combine in a variety of work ranging from rugs and wall hangings to scarves. For the past thirteen years I have had the opportunity to work as artist-in-residence at Rydal Hall near Ambleside and develop a unique collection of outdoor textiles within the Rydal Hall Sculpture Path. Many of these pieces are felted and I have been able to observe the changes as fibre and fabric weathers and evolves with the seasons. After a long career in textiles I now have a strong interest in passing on skills for others to enjoy and develop them further. There are a wide range of courses on offer throughout the year at The Old Rescue Station, Low Rd, Brigham, outside Cockermouth where I have a GALLERY and a TEACHING ROOM. I aim to offer plenty of individual attention alongside opportunities to learn and play with techniques in sociable, small groups. In addition to a programme of events groups of up to 6 can select their own course content and date. With Saturday and Sunday courses on offer you can enjoy a creative weekend in a beautiful area. Advice about accommodation and other local textile attractions is available on request.
