Mary Burkett first visited Persia (now Iran) in 1962, and came across a mother and daughter felting a carpet, something she had never seen before. This sparked her lifelong passion for the often neglected art of feltmaking and, in time, prompted her to found the International Feltmakers Association in 1984.
Since then, the interest in feltmaking has grown and techniques have developed in new and exciting ways. Here are just some of the questions we are asked:
- Do all breeds felt the same way?
- How do I calculate shrinkage?
- What’s the difference between felting and fulling?
- What kind of soap can I use?
- How can I create patterns?
- Is there a way to blend colours?
- What is a resist?
- What is nuno felting?
- How do I know when a piece is finished?

Discovering Feltmaking (DF)
You can buy our online feltmaking techniques courses (members and non-members alike) on our website.
These courses are invaluable for all feltmakers. You may be just starting out in feltmaking or, as a more seasoned feltmaker, want to find answers to your questions. Our workshops teach you how to make small-scale samples using the wet-felting method. By the end of each course, you will have created a personal resource that you can refer to for all of your feltmaking projects.
