SUMMARY:Steph Jansen Fine Felt Landscape – Featured Artist at Hopton Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Visit Steph Jansen’s first solo exhibition at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne\, Derbyshire. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. Silk tops provide sheen and definition\, while fabric inclusions add depth and an additional layer of visual interest. \nHer recent landscape works begin with a layer of silk chiffon\, though the wool itself may also be laid out directly onto a flat surface without a supporting base. Through the wet felting process\, the microscopic scales on each wool fibre interlock to form a strong\, unified textile. This transformation is guided by warm\, soapy water and repeated rubbing and rolling\, resulting in works that celebrate both materiality and process. \nThe gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday. Steph will be taking part in a Meet the Artist event on Sunday 6 September\, 12.30-4pm\, demonstrating her work\, and chatting with guests. All are welcome to pop in.

DESCRIPTION:The 43rd annual  Mountain and Valley Wool Association Festival. \nA two-day festival celebrating all things fibre.\nJuried vendors offering fleeces\, natural fibers\, supplies and tools\, kits\, yarns\, clothing\, and art\, other finished fiber items – all hand-made\, no imports or resale!\nFamily activities: animal encounters (sheep\, llamas\, alpacas\, yaks)\, free demonstrations\, contests\, yarn bombing\, silent auction\, fleece show and sale\,\nFood\, live music.. \nAll in the beautiful year-round resort town of Durango with its historic downtown\, river\, scenery\, outdoor activities\, art\, restaurants\, coffee shops\, and independent shops. \nAdmission and on site parking are free\, and there’s a wide range of nearby accommodation. \nA variety of workshops run from the preceding Thursday through the Sunday morning\, taught by accomplished instructors from across the country. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to elevate your felt making with stitch to develop further surface embellishments on your felt work by incorporating hand and machine embroidery. You’ll create samplers of useful hand stitches and experiment with sewing machine stitches and free motion embroidery\, to create new patterns and textures on your felts’ surfaces. \nDuring this two day workshop weekend you will learn how to: \n*Create reference samplers using a variety of hand stitches practicing the technique to create each stitch and how to adapt and apply the stitches to work freely & creatively to decorate your felt.\n*Identify the pre-set stitches available on the sewing machine. Experiment with theses stitches to practice making stitched surface effects.\n*Set up the machine to create free motion embroidery. Practice using the sewing machine to develop control using free motion embroidery. Practice using free motion embroidery to ‘draw’ and create surface pattern for embellishing the felt surface.\n*We will work on both cotton fabrics and handmade felt to make samplers and practice the techniques.\nWhilst we will make some hand made felt during the workshop\, ideally you will need to bring several pieces of hand made felt you have made prior to the workshop to practice the stitch techniques on. We will discuss how to ensure your felt is suitable for stitching on with and you will have the opportunity to make sampler pieces of felt to work on too. \nThis workshop takes place over two days between 10am – 4:30pm Saturday\, 10am – 4pm Sunday at Silversoles Studio. Alternative times are available by arrangement.\nThe next workshop is on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October 2026. DESCRIPTION:Retreat to the charm of Lititz\, PA a town with a traditional Main Street for a 3 – day immersion into a 3-D felted sculptural experience when you join Ellen Silberlicht in her studio.\nEllen is known for her raku fired textural vessels which she complements with her playful wet felted sculptural tops.\nThrough hands on learning\, Ellen will share with you the techniques she uses to achieve the many sculptural forms she incorporates into her work.\nEach person may come with a few sketches and ideas to share. We will discuss ideas and construction issues that may arise. Armatures will be discussed\, techniques shared and final decisions made.\nI would expect changes in design may happen after learning the techniques. Ideas always take off when new things are shared!\nWe will\, continue to problem solve and bring each person’s ideas into being. A pause may be in order to share each participant’s approach\, for we can learn so much from one another.\nThis 3-day class will culminate with a rich garden of dancing felted forms emerging from their vessels! I can already imagine them! \nThis class is limited to 6 participants. Recommended for mid to advanced level felters\nWhat is included?\n1 raku fired vessel made by me to inspire your felted sculptural top.\nDaily Lunch\, snacks\, coffee\, tea\, water\nAll supplies will be included but I suggest you bring some of your favorite colors. \nWhat to bring:\nA playful spirit\nA few favorite wool colors\nBeads and other adornments you may want to incorporate\nYour favorite felting tools. \nSPECIFIC DATES TBA\n**** The first person who signs up will be able to choose the dates in October which work for them and me. ****\nThey will also have first choice of my raku vessels and the rest will follow in order. \nLititz is a treasure of little shops\, gorgeous rolling farmland\, with October celebrating the fall season. DESCRIPTION:Next edition will run October 11 – December 20\, 2026 with platform access through March 7\, 2027. Develop an in-depth understanding of foundational structure for refinement\, strength and flexibility in wet felting based on the concept of space for the wool filaments to move and the direction of encouragement by the maker. Multi-dimensional form will be constructed through connecting solid forms\, 2D planes and a variety of felt encased objects within one continuous felt skin and by employing strong clasping/hinging mechanisms. Though needle felting will occasionally be employed this is a wet felting course. Demonstrated module studies are meant to be repeated\, modified and uniquely coalesced to become pathways to approach your ideas and visions through two instructor supported projects via zoom design meetings midway and at the end of this 10 week course. DESCRIPTION:Visit Steph Jansen’s first solo exhibition at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne\, Derbyshire. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. When worn\, the felted wool will mould to the shape of each foot adding further comfort to the wearer. The wearing of wool slippers against the skin is also said to help stimulate blood circulation! During this two day workshop you will design and make your own unique pair of felted wool slippers. These seamless felt slippers can be made in a slipper style of your choice; slip on mules or clog slipper with a heel blast height of your choosing. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn & enhance your felting skills whilst creating a practical project. DESCRIPTION:(students should have previous knowledge about the foundations of felting\,\nsome experience of felting with resists can be helpful) \nWool as a fascinating natural\, malleable material offers almost endless possibilities for sculptural creations. For each of my WALLHANGINGS workshops\, I’m focussing on a specific theme\, in order to examine the details of this particular approach in greater depth and take a close look at the technical details involved.\nThis year\, under the general topic COLLAGES we want to design the surface of a felted wallhanging by combining flat and 3d-elements and fusing them into one seamless piece.\nCollages are a quiet playful and stimulating way of creating a work out of bits and pieces of a variety of materials. The result is usually open-ended\, the final image only emerges during the\nprocess\, by trying out different arrangements and carefully observing how the various fragments come together and interact with each other. This allows you to experiment with different wool types and textures and create out of them a work with individual style and esthetics.\nIn flat parts\, fibres will have space to develop their beautiful structure\, while the 3d sections will bring an additional contrast into the picture and give us the opportunity to look at some features of spatial felt forms as well. You will learn about composition and consistency of suitable handmade prefelts\, possibilities for graphic and tactile surface texture\, and finally assemble all fragments in a collage that will be firmly felted onto a thick\, rather substancial base.\nWe will explore how different fibres can be used best in the felting process and how to emphasize their beauty and characteristics. In a former workshop in Montbrun we examined some typical regional wool types and can draw on some good examples in the material archive.\nBe aware though\, coarse wools are suitable for the base and larger elements\, for fine and small scale details you will need to use fine fibres.
