Demonstrated module studies are meant to be repeated\, modified and uniquely coalesced to become pathways to approach your ideas and visions through two instructor supported projects via zoom design meetings midway and at the end of this 10 week course. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. Silk tops provide sheen and definition\, while fabric inclusions add depth and an additional layer of visual interest. \nHer recent landscape works begin with a layer of silk chiffon\, though the wool itself may also be laid out directly onto a flat surface without a supporting base. Through the wet felting process\, the microscopic scales on each wool fibre interlock to form a strong\, unified textile. This transformation is guided by warm\, soapy water and repeated rubbing and rolling\, resulting in works that celebrate both materiality and process. \nThe gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday. Steph will be taking part in a Meet the Artist event on Sunday 6 September\, 12.30-4pm\, demonstrating her work\, and chatting with guests. All are welcome to pop in.

The felted fleeces make a beautiful feature in any home and can be used as rugs\, stunning wall hangings\, or as cosy chair or bench throws\, keeping your warm & comfortable\, especially in the winter months. \nThis is a great introduction to learning how to work with raw fleece. The bonus is you will be helping to support British farmers by making use of their sheep’s sheared fleeces\, the sheep enjoy their annual hair cut\, you learn news skills and take home a  beautiful work of art! \nDuring the day you will learn how to;\n*Prepare the raw fleece – skirting\, dagging and removing vegetable matter\n*Layout a backing\n*Bind the fleece together using soap\, water & elbow grease\n*Scour and wash out the lanolin and field dirt\n*Dry & Finish the Fleece \nWe’ll discuss which different breeds fleeces felt readily\, the fibres suitable for backings and two ways to finish your fleece rug. DESCRIPTION:Visit Steph Jansen’s first solo exhibition at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne\, Derbyshire. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. The bonus is you will be helping to support British farmers by making use of their sheep’s sheared fleeces\, the sheep enjoy their annual hair cut\, you learn news skills and take home a  beautiful work of art! \nDuring the day you will learn how to;\n*Prepare the raw fleece – skirting\, dagging and removing vegetable matter\n*Layout a backing\n*Bind the fleece together using soap\, water & elbow grease\n*Scour and wash out the lanolin and field dirt\n*Dry & Finish the Fleece \nWe’ll discuss which different breeds fleeces felt readily\, the fibres suitable for backings and two ways to finish your fleece rug. DESCRIPTION:3 COLLARS – 3 FELTING TECHNIQUES\,\npart II: FEATHER COLLAR \nFor a collar with feathers or petals we will build a 3d structure of many small elements on the surface of a basic form. We will focus on a precise and fine layout of all single „ingredients“\, clear contours and a harmonic position of all feathers on the base. With a complex composition like this we should take good care when starting the felting process itself\, to keep control of all components included and make sure they would all connect properly.\nYou should have some prior experience working with resists (or\, to make it easier\, begin with a version with not too many feathers). \nThere are 3 groups available for different time zones\, each one meets on 2 days:\nGr. 1  September 10/11\, 2026 in English 08-11 a.m. (CEST\, Berlin time = suitable for Europe\, Australia/NZ)\nGr. 2  September 12/13\, 2026 in Deutsch 10 -13 h\nGr. 3  September 12/13\, 2026 in English 06-09 p.m. (CEST\, Berlin time = suitable for Europe\, America) \nFrom module 1 to 3 of the COLLAR SERIES\, we will have a look at different techniques and possibilities for a decorative neckpiece\, gradually increase the complexity and level of our projects. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. Think of it instead as a hybrid between a sculpture studio\, an artist residency\, and a troubleshooting clinic—a focussed development space designed for felt makers who already have a practice and want time\, space\, and expert guidance to deepen it.\nThis is a place to slow down\, experiment\, problem-solve\, and refine. A place where unfinished work is welcome\, uncertainty is productive\, and play is taken seriously. A place designed to help you move your felt work forward with confidence and clarity.\nThis Open Lab supports you in resolving unfinished work\, strengthening sculptural decisions\, and deepening your understanding of form\, structure\, and surface. You bring the work; together we identify what it needs next.\nThe Lab offers dedicated studio time\, access to equipment\, professional insight\, and a supportive peer environment. It is ideal if you are already working on your own felt sculpture\, mask\, or other 3D felted form and need space to focus\, alongside experienced guidance when questions arise.\nBring your unfinished or unresolved sculptural projects—especially those that have left you stuck\, frustrated\, or unsure how to proceed—and we will work through them together. Rather than following a set brief\, you’ll be supported in developing your ideas\, forms\, and sculptural language.  \nThis format allows for far more time spent on sculpting and refinement than a standard taught workshop\, making it especially valuable for those wanting to push their work further.

DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to create a unique piece of home decor to complement your home and learn two new skills – Feltmaking and Lampshade making! \nDay One: Using merino or a native breed wool with additional yarns and fibres such as silk\, linen and soya  – you will design and make a piece of felt fabric. You will learn how to lay the wool and other fibres and apply wet felting techniques to bond the fibres together. You can choose neutral tones\, bright jewel colours\, abstract patterns or more pictorial elements to create your unique design. At the end of this first half day session you will have a piece of flat fabric which you will go on to make your bespoke lampshade with.\nDay Two: Using the felt fabric prepared in the first session you will make your lampshade. Learning how to cut your felt fabric to size\, adhere a fire resistant backing and shade rings\, to construct your lampshade. This session will give you a basic understanding of how to make a drum lampshade\, equipped with these new skills\, you can apply this knowledge to future projects with confidence. \nWe will make drum lampshades of 20cm d. or 30cm diametre. Other sizes are available on request and attract an additional material fee\, please contact me to discuss your requirements. \nThis workshop takes place over two half day sessions between 10am – 2pm each day.
