Learn new skills and leave with beautiful wearable art! \n Felted wool slippers offer luxurious comfort and health giving properties for your feet\, as they offer natural insulation and breathable temperature regulation. When worn\, the felted wool will mould to the shape of each foot adding further comfort to the wearer. The wearing of wool slippers against the skin is also said to help stimulate blood circulation! During this two day workshop you will design and make your own unique pair of felted wool slippers. These seamless felt slippers can be made in a slipper style of your choice; slip on mules or clog slipper with a heel blast height of your choosing. \nThis is a great opportunity to learn & enhance your felting skills whilst creating a practical project. DESCRIPTION:(students should have previous knowledge about the foundations of felting\,\nsome experience of felting with resists can be helpful) \nWool as a fascinating natural\, malleable material offers almost endless possibilities for sculptural creations. For each of my WALLHANGINGS workshops\, I’m focussing on a specific theme\, in order to examine the details of this particular approach in greater depth and take a close look at the technical details involved.\nThis year\, under the general topic COLLAGES we want to design the surface of a felted wallhanging by combining flat and 3d-elements and fusing them into one seamless piece.\nCollages are a quiet playful and stimulating way of creating a work out of bits and pieces of a variety of materials. The result is usually open-ended\, the final image only emerges during the\nprocess\, by trying out different arrangements and carefully observing how the various fragments come together and interact with each other. This allows you to experiment with different wool types and textures and create out of them a work with individual style and esthetics.\nIn flat parts\, fibres will have space to develop their beautiful structure\, while the 3d sections will bring an additional contrast into the picture and give us the opportunity to look at some features of spatial felt forms as well. You will learn about composition and consistency of suitable handmade prefelts\, possibilities for graphic and tactile surface texture\, and finally assemble all fragments in a collage that will be firmly felted onto a thick\, rather substancial base.\nWe will explore how different fibres can be used best in the felting process and how to emphasize their beauty and characteristics. In a former workshop in Montbrun we examined some typical regional wool types and can draw on some good examples in the material archive.\nBe aware though\, coarse wools are suitable for the base and larger elements\, for fine and small scale details you will need to use fine fibres. SUMMARY:Steph Jansen Fine Felt Landscape – Featured Artist at Hopton Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Visit Steph Jansen’s first solo exhibition at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne\, Derbyshire. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. Silk tops provide sheen and definition\, while fabric inclusions add depth and an additional layer of visual interest. \nHer recent landscape works begin with a layer of silk chiffon\, though the wool itself may also be laid out directly onto a flat surface without a supporting base. Through the wet felting process\, the microscopic scales on each wool fibre interlock to form a strong\, unified textile. DESCRIPTION:(students should have previous knowledge about the foundations of felting\,\nsome experience of felting with resists can be helpful) \nWool as a fascinating natural\, malleable material offers almost endless possibilities for sculptural creations. For each of my WALLHANGINGS workshops\, I’m focussing on a specific theme\, in order to examine the details of this particular approach in greater depth and take a close look at the technical details involved.\nThis year\, under the general topic COLLAGES we want to design the surface of a felted wallhanging by combining flat and 3d-elements and fusing them into one seamless piece.\nCollages are a quiet playful and stimulating way of creating a work out of bits and pieces of a variety of materials. The result is usually open-ended\, the final image only emerges during the\nprocess\, by trying out different arrangements and carefully observing how the various fragments come together and interact with each other. This allows you to experiment with different wool types and textures and create out of them a work with individual style and esthetics.\nIn flat parts\, fibres will have space to develop their beautiful structure\, while the 3d sections will bring an additional contrast into the picture and give us the opportunity to look at some features of spatial felt forms as well. You will learn about composition and consistency of suitable handmade prefelts\, possibilities for graphic and tactile surface texture\, and finally assemble all fragments in a collage that will be firmly felted onto a thick\, rather substancial base.\nWe will explore how different fibres can be used best in the felting process and how to emphasize their beauty and characteristics. In a former workshop in Montbrun we examined some typical regional wool types and can draw on some good examples in the material archive.\nBe aware though\, coarse wools are suitable for the base and larger elements\, for fine and small scale details you will need to use fine fibres. SUMMARY:Steph Jansen Fine Felt Landscape – Featured Artist at Hopton Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Visit Steph Jansen’s first solo exhibition at Hopton Hall Gallery in Ashbourne\, Derbyshire. Steph will be showing her latest large scale felt landscapes in the ground floor space\, alongside Surface\, Stitch and Story (Texture / Textiles) in the upstairs gallery. \nA striking presentation of Jansen’s distinctive wet felt textile practice\, she creates felt “paintings” through the wet felting process\, using loose wool fibres as her primary medium. Predominantly working with pre-dyed merino tops\, she draws on a rich and varied colour palette reminiscent of traditional paint.  \nNatural\, undyed fibres are incorporated to introduce contrasting textures and felting qualities\, alongside wool locks that retain their natural curl for added character and movement. Silk tops provide sheen and definition\, while fabric inclusions add depth and an additional layer of visual interest. \nHer recent landscape works begin with a layer of silk chiffon\, though the wool itself may also be laid out directly onto a flat surface without a supporting base. Through the wet felting process\, the microscopic scales on each wool fibre interlock to form a strong\, unified textile. This transformation is guided by warm\, soapy water and repeated rubbing and rolling\, resulting in works that celebrate both materiality and process. \nThe gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday. Steph will be taking part in a Meet the Artist event on Sunday 6 September\, 12.30-4pm\, demonstrating her work\, and chatting with guests. All are welcome to pop in.
