SUMMARY:Online\, DIVERSITY – discovering new species in felt\, Dagmar Binder
DESCRIPTION:Choosing one specific approach to a felting project\, we often don’t notice how many other ways we could have gone from this point and come to different\, often surprising results.\nThis crucial moment implies an incredible potential for new discoveries\, creative solutions and a rich source for learning more about the material and techniques we are using.\nIn this workshop we will take off for an exiting expedition: we will use only one set of resists and explore a variety of ways to develop felt objects from this starting point. Playing with changing positions\, different ways of cutting\, shrinking\, deformation etc. we will dive into the amazing creative potential of felting.\nThe techniques used in this workshop can later be applied to various designs\, fine art\, decorative or wearable objects. \nThere are 3 groups available\, suitable for different time zones. Each one meets on 2 days: \nGr. 1	April 11/12\, 2024 in English 08-11 a.m. (Berlin time = suitable for Europe\, Australia/NZ)\nGr. 2 13./14. April 2024 in Deutsch 10-13 h\nGr. 3	April 13/14\, 2024 in English 06-09 p.m. (Berlin time = suitable for Europe\, America)

SUMMARY:FILZ GESTALTET RAUM / FOKUS FILZ - 2 felt exhibitions in Heidelberg\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:TEXTILSAMMLUNG MAX BERK\, Heidelberg presents 2 felt exhibitions March 24 – July 28\, 2024\nMittwoch\, Samstag\, Sonntag (wed/sat/sun): 13 – 18 Uhr \nFILZ GESTALTET RAUM (FELT DESIGNS SPACE) of the German feltmakers’ network FILZNETZWERK e.V.\nand FOKUS FILZ (FOKUS FELT) organized by Ulrike Hartrumpf and Bärbel Helfrich \nIn der Ausstellung „Filz gestaltet Raum“ des Filznetzwerks e. V. haben sich über 30 Künstlerinnen auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise dem Thema Raumbegriff genähert und ihm sehr vielfältige Bedeutungen entlockt. Raum wird nicht nur als Zimmer\, sondern auch als physikalische Größe\, als Natur- und Lebensraum und zugleich als unendlich und nicht greifbar wahrgenommen. Mit jedem Raum ist eine ganz eigene Atmosphäre unmittelbar verbunden. So entstand z. SUMMARY:Fine Felt Making with British Wool
DESCRIPTION:Liz Clay teaches a new workshop at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. A three day short course at the prestigious international college set in the beautiful South Downs of England.\nFine felt making with British wools invites the felt maker to explore less familiar native wools and to celebrate their diversity for fine felt making and unique hand crafted outcomes. Sampling exercises will inform your own design aims using a range of felting methods.\nThe British Isles have a rich source of diverse wool types with more breeds of sheep than any other in the world; more than 60 different breeds from hill and mountain to fine and lustre breeds. A sustainable\, renewable and environmentally positive fibre choice\, the characteristics of these breeds vary widely\, with the potential to celebrate this diversity for unique hand crafted outcomes.

SUMMARY:DAGMAR BINDER Seamless waistcoats with 3d structures or multiple collars (Montbrun\, Oct 30–Nov 1\, 2023)
DESCRIPTION:After some years\, 3d sculptural waistcoats are back to Montbrun-Bocage.. You will have a new chance to learn more about felting a seamless and well-fitting garment\, a waistcoat (or\, if you are are an advanced and quick felter… you may even think of adding sleeves for a jacket).\nWe will have a close look at how fibre direction and combination of materials would influence consistency\, shape and flexibility of a felt. This way you will be more aware of these aspects while\nplanning your vest design.\nFelting a sample of the wool types of your choice you can calculate shrinkage and develop a pattern for your individual size. Around this template you will start laying out fibres for the seamless body of\nyour vest and only after that (if you like the idea…) add 3d structures or other additional elements\, like extra collars\, surface structures\, pockets etc.\nAfter completing the layout\, your garment will be prefelted by rubbing and rolling until all elements are well connected\, then resists can be removed\, the waistcoat shaped 3-dimensionally and final\ndetails accentuated by hand.

SUMMARY:Depth of Surface: Patterning\, Fabric Fusion & Machine Stitching by Lisa Klakulak
DESCRIPTION:Participants will explore the variables in the wet felting process of coercing wool fibers through fabrics of various structures\, fiber types\, densities and surface design to develop unique surface texture and design modifications. \nAdditionally\, shapes cut from sheets of felt that have been partially felted to different levels of integrity will be used to create pattern fields as well ast o create a contrasting texture resist. \nFree-motion embroidery will then be implemented to define shape edges\, accent textures and emboss thick felt. \nEnhance your felt work with a fresh surface aesthetic! \nFor this course it is necessary to bring a sewing machine that has feed dogs that drop and a free motion embroidery foot or a darning foot \nImportant to know: the coursework is aimed at studies of composition and aesthetic development rather than finished objects

SUMMARY:Wild Fibres and Wildlife: Form & Texture for Felted Hats & Vessels\, 3-day workshop by Dawn Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Be inspired by nature: make fabulous eye-catching vessels and hats! \nThis is a 3-day workshop to be taught by Dawn Edwards (USA) an internationally renowned fibre artist She specialises in making unique felted hats and vessels inspired by nature: sculptural hats in the forms of flowers or leaves\, and bowls and berets that recreate the forest floor\, the home of tiny creatures and plant forms. She skillfully felts and sculpts wool fibres using wet felting\, nuno felting\, resists\, fabric manipulation\, and embellishing with fabrics\, silk and plant fibres\, beads and sequins. \nWith a desire to express their love of nature and bring the beauty of nature into their homes\, participants will be able to explore innovative methods of making unique and eye-catching vessels and hats inspired by leaves\, flowers\, lichens\, fungi\, seed pods\, pine cones\, and more. They can expect to make at least three fabulous eye-catching creations that show their love of nature\, by designing vessels and hats inspired by the natural world and making them to suit their own style – fashionable\, sophisticated\, fanciful or fun. \nDawn is based in the USA and her artistic and teaching skills are recognised internationally. This is a rare opportunity for local feltmakers to learn from her in a workshop setting.

SUMMARY:Resist-based Pendants: Hollow Forms\, Dimensional Surfaces & Object Encasement By Lisa Klalulak
DESCRIPTION:Participants will explore 3D techniques for creating unique small scale pendants with hanging bails using 2D template resists. \nLearn to encase durable objects to add color\, texture\, material complexity and conceptual relevancy in your work. \nBy simply wrapping fiber around an object\, one doesn’t provide ample space for the fibers to felt and therefore one must employ a resist larger than the object\, which involved just a little calculation! Then\, sculpt hollow form using surface resists to create dimensional planes of felt and embed partial felt within the surface to develop convex protrusions through differential shrinkage.

SUMMARY:FELTING WITH GLADYS PAULUS in the South of France 6 DAYS WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:INTRODUCTION TO MAKING ANIMAL MASKS – THE BASICS (LEVEL 1) September 25 to 30\n 5 days\, 1 day off\n•Type: Advanced workshop\n•Level: Advanced\nIn this advanced workshop\, students are guided through the basic principles and techniques of felting an animal mask\, step by step\, from start to finish\, using a relatively uncomplicated animal as their starting point. The focus is less on achieving a hyper-realistic and hyper detailed mask of the type created in master classes\, and more on achieving a thorough understanding of the different aspects involved in the process\, and on executing each stage well. The sculpting aspect is something that many find difficult and daunting\, as it requires more than just a knowledge of felt making. By focusing on relatively “simple” animal shapes\, we spend less time on intricate surface details\, complex technical feats\, or wide variety of embellishments\, and more time on learning how to achieve strong and convincing sculptural shapes\nThis advanced workshop is aimed at those who would like to gain a thorough understanding of how to make a full head cover animal mask\, but who are not yet ready to make overly complex and detailed pieces. This workshop is an excellent prelude to those who wish to progress to the Faces of Extinction master class in future.\n Learning is supported through practical demonstrations\, one-to-one consultations and practical help\, handouts and illustrated explanations.\n DAY 1: Shrinkage / designing & preparing the resist / laying out 1 & 2\nDAY 2: Eyes / laying out 3 & 4\nDAY 3: Attachments /laying out 5 & 6 /fur\, hair\nDAY 4: Felting / sculpting\nDAY 5: Sculpting / finishes\nMore information at atelierdubocage31@gmail.com

These will form the jumping off point for a deeper exploration of felt making techniques and effects\, as well as contrast and composition\, and become the basis for a very personal line of inquiry. This workshop is not about achieving a particular outcome\, but rather about the joy of responding in the moment and learning through play\, trial and “error”. It is intended to give you the freedom and time to explore\, experiment that is so often lacking in our daily life\, and to deepen your understanding of the medium. You will develop the beginnings of a reference library of techniques and ideas to enable future projects\, which can continue to grow at home. A wide range of materials may be incorporated into the samples\, and you will be encouraged to think outside the box. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT a 3-D sculpting workshop! While some 3-D elements may be incorporated on the surface of the felt\, we will be focussing on the creation of 2-D samples ONLY.\nWhether a felt maker preparing for a specific project or body of work\, or a felt maker who simply would like to explore textures and techniques through some experimental play\, this workshop aims to help you get started on what may well become a life-long addiction. The contents of this workshop are flexible and will be tailored to the students. Students are expected to come with an open mind and experimental attitude. Learning is supported through practical demonstrations and illustrated explanations. \nCOURSE OUTLINE\nDAY 1 Group work: Starting out\, pre-felts\, fabrics\, textures\, contrast.\nDAY 2 Group work: Framing & selecting\, zooming in\, following an inquiry.\nDAY 3 Individual inquiry\nDAY 4 Individual inquiry\nDAY 5 Individual inquiry continued\, show & tell\, closing.\n More information at atelierdubocage31@gmail.com
