SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's workshop\, Felt: Depth of Surface/Depth of Field
DESCRIPTION:5-day in person workshop at a destination craft school on a working farm. Explore thickness of layout and densities of partially felted sheets of wool for patterning effects\, texture resists and edging techniques when fusing wool through fabrics. Incorporate surprising substrates and a variety to be used to trap found objects under and in fabric pockets to add strategic weight\, defined shape\, dimension and color. Free-motion embroidery will be applied to offer finer detailing and to compress remaining airspace in the felt creating an embossed effect. These studies/samples of intensive techniques are suggested as a focal point in a larger field of felt\, for example: a jacket cuff\, a shirt collar\, a bag flap\, an aspect of a wall hanging and/or a jewelry component. \nNot for novice felters. Intermediate & Advance participants having experience with laying out thin and evenly and looking to develop new aesthetics through structural play of felt\, fabric and stitch.\n**Wet felting is a physically demanding process. Participants should be comfortable standing; have shoulder\, arm and hand strength/mobility; be comfortable with having their hands in wet/soapy conditions for hours and exposed to hot and cold water. **

SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's workshop: Wool & Wood Collaboration with Graeme Priddle
DESCRIPTION:In this 5-day workshop at a destination craft school pop-up\, explore mixing media of wood and wool with fiber artist Lisa Klakulak and wood turner and texturer extraoridinaire\, Graeme Priddle. Both of these fibers (cellulose and protein) have a linear microscopic structure (grain and filament) that informs the processes of textural manipulation. Both materials are supple\, yet surface relief will be developed differently for each. Carve and burn pre-fabricated and found wood objects\, while raising and compressing hand made wool felt surfaces with shrinkage and stitching. Color wood with milk and acrylic paints\, pens and pencils\, and use pre-dyed wool to felt through a variety of other pre-made fabrics varying in color\, structure and surface design\, plus integrate yarns and free-motion embroidery. Collaborate with materials and with other participants by encasing textured wood in a felt skin\, inlaying textured felt in a wood surface\, binding edges or…\nAll levels welcome. All meals included\, Housing fees vary.

SUMMARY:Felt Lampshades
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to create a unique piece of home decor to complement your home and learn two new skills – Feltmaking and Lampshade making! \nDay One: Using merino or a native breed wool with additional yarns and fibres such as silk\, linen and soya – you will design and make a piece of felt fabric. You will learn how to lay the wool and other fibres and apply wet felting techniques to bond the fibres together. You can choose neutral tones\, bright jewel colours\, abstract patterns or more pictoral elements to create your unique design. At the end of this first half day session you will have a piece of flat fabric which you will go on to make your bespoke lampshade with. \nDay Two: Using the felt fabric prepared in the first session you will make your lampshade. Learning how to cut your felt fabric to size\, adhere a fire resistant backing and shade rings\, to construct your lampshade. This session will give you a basic understanding of how to make a drum lampshade\, equipped with these new skills\, you can apply this knowledge to future projects with confidence. \nIf you have a stash of yarns\, fabric or other material\, and which of us that love textiles doesn’t\, do bring along any bits you’d like to incorporate into your work. Prior to the first session consider what colour\, pattern and design you would like your shade to have by collecting images\, making sketches and notes. \nAll materials and equipment are provided. Illustrated handouts notes are offered to enable you to continue to practice what you learn during the workshop. No previous felting experience is required. All abilities are welcomed as this workshop is especially suitable for beginners and those wishing to extend their felting practice. \nThis is a two day workshop starting on Saturday 1st June 2024 10am – 2pm and finishing the following day Sunday 2nd June 2024 10am – 2pm

SUMMARY:Felt Rug Repair Project
DESCRIPTION:Felt Rug Project\nGrace Smith and I (Emma Jackson) are in the process of repairing and restoring her Shrydak felt rug. This is an ongoing project that began over a year ago after Grace discovered to her horror that moth lavae had munched their way through large parts of her rug beautiful felt rug. To date this has been a process of researching how to eradicate any last vestiges of lavae and prevent future infestations. We have clarified which wools were used to make the rug and selected the wool type most suitable to repair it. This has involved understanding the dyes used\, the strength and durability of the wool needed and how the rug was originally assembled. It has and continues to be a steep learning curve\, and has provided interesting insights into the changing use of dyes\, from natural to acid dyes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union during the last hundred years. \nWe have now moved onto the actual repair stage now\, needle felting the new wool into the front and back of the holes and tracks eaten away by the lava. To help prevent the work becoming overwhelming\, Grace has stitched a grid across the rug so we can work methodical\, focusing on one area at at time. We are meeting fortnightly at The Old Printworks in Baslall Heath (Birmingham) and approaching this part of the restoration as a community project\, inviting people to join in and learn about felting along the way. If you are interested in taking part please message me for further details. \nEveryone is welcome to come along\, see & chat about the project and have a go at repairing the rug. These are very friendly\, informal sessions. You can drop in for one off visits\, come for multiple sessions\, when you can\, be it an hour or for the whole morning you are very welcome. Come along & get involved with the repair project\, it’s very therapeutic! \nHeld at The Old Print Works in Birmingham\, B12 9AH from 9:30-12noon\nThe next meet up dates are;\nApril 24th\nMay 1st\,\nMay 15th\nMay 29th. \nPlease let Grace know by messaging (07983 705793)\, when you’d like to come\, so she can let you into the building. We’d love to see you.

SUMMARY:“Discovery through Felt ”( 1/2) Sculptural Felting Workshop MARJOLEIN DALLINGA
DESCRIPTION:Join the trainer MARJOLEIN DALLINGA\, from May 09 to May 15 2024 for a 7 days spring residence in the south of France : a manual wool felt session in two parts.\nYou don’t create art\, it already exist\, you have to let it come to you\, going where art is instead of you creating it\, Take action based on your excitement\, with no attachment to the outcome\nIt is from the dance of conflicting emotions that creativity and art are born. Though sculpture is usually perceived as static I see it more as movement\, the movement of wool from fibers into felt.\nAnd as long as there is movement there is life.\nThis 6-day workshop is a discovery journey filled with many experiences of modeling different wools and other fibers. We will explore different techniques for sculptural form ideas\, with themes like: folding and unfolding\, building relief\, clamping and binding. All to become more aware of how and why we want to use this medium. This workshop is inspired by the idea that we have to allow ourselves to discover new ways of creating with wool. Let the wool make you feel things\, and then decide if it is any good. \nfULL RESIDENCE ON SITE IS AVAILIABLE

SUMMARY:Skulpturale Filzformen für Wandobjekte und Kragen\, Dagmar Binder

SUMMARY:FILZ GESTALTET RAUM / FOKUS FILZ - 2 felt exhibitions in Heidelberg\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:TEXTILSAMMLUNG MAX BERK\, Heidelberg presents 2 felt exhibitions March 24 – July 28\, 2024\nMittwoch\, Samstag\, Sonntag (wed/sat/sun): 13 – 18 Uhr \nFILZ GESTALTET RAUM (FELT DESIGNS SPACE) of the German feltmakers’ network FILZNETZWERK e.V.\nand FOKUS FILZ (FOKUS FELT) organized by Ulrike Hartrumpf and Bärbel Helfrich \nIn der Ausstellung „Filz gestaltet Raum“ des Filznetzwerks e. V. haben sich über 30 Künstlerinnen auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise dem Thema Raumbegriff genähert und ihm sehr vielfältige Bedeutungen entlockt. Raum wird nicht nur als Zimmer\, sondern auch als physikalische Größe\, als Natur- und Lebensraum und zugleich als unendlich und nicht greifbar wahrgenommen. Mit jedem Raum ist eine ganz eigene Atmosphäre unmittelbar verbunden. So entstand z. SUMMARY:Fine Felt Making with British Wool
DESCRIPTION:Liz Clay teaches a new workshop at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. A three day short course at the prestigious international college set in the beautiful South Downs of England.\nFine felt making with British wools invites the felt maker to explore less familiar native wools and to celebrate their diversity for fine felt making and unique hand crafted outcomes.
