SUMMARY:Felted Wall Art with Chris Lines
DESCRIPTION:This 2 day workshop will extend your design skills and build your confidence: how to compose with the basic design elements in an abstract or semi-abstract way\, without it all coming down to ‘happy accidents’. All these skills can be applied more consciously in your chosen form\, be they images\, garments\, or objects. Revel in the visual and tactile pleasures of felt-making on a scale that enables you to explore design without large-scale physical effort.\nMy workshops will give you a mental workout\, rather than a physical one! \nIn this workshop you will be able to utilise some of your favourite techniques\, such as Nuno with fabrics and paper\, including those you have dyed or printed yourself; stitch/embroidery; ‘cracked earth’ using resists; and shibori textures to create small 3D elements; if you choose to do so. We will also discuss finishing options\, such as edging\, backing and hanging. \nIf you would like to add a small photographic element this is possible by prior arrangement. \nSo that we can make the most of the two days\, when you sign up for the workshop\, you will be given further information to help you prepare\, including a preliminary look at your ideas in a one-to-one correspondence with Chris. The aim is not to put in everything you’ve ever learned but to be able to select and use the techniques you enjoy in a more artistic\, personal and creative way.

SUMMARY:GLADYS PAULUS: SAMPLES: A LIBRARY OF IDEAS 5 days workshop October 03 to 07\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:During this workshop\, you will make a series of 2-D felt pieces from which small samples (approximately 15 x 15cm) are selected. These will form the jumping off point for a deeper exploration of felt making techniques and effects\, as well as contrast and composition\, and become the basis for a very personal line of inquiry. This workshop is not about achieving a particular outcome\, but rather about the joy of responding in the moment and learning through play\, trial and “error”. It is intended to give you the freedom and time to explore\, experiment that is so often lacking in our daily life\, and to deepen your understanding of the medium. You will develop the beginnings of a reference library of techniques and ideas to enable future projects\, which can continue to grow at home. A wide range of materials may be incorporated into the samples\, and you will be encouraged to think outside the box.

SUMMARY:Spinning a Yarn
DESCRIPTION:Telling the Story of Wool in Somerset \nAs part of this year’s Somerset Art Weeks Festival Somerset Rural Life Museum will be celebrating one of the county’s most sustainable natural products. ‘Spinning a Yarn’ is a partnership project with Somerset Art Works to tell the story of wool in Somerset. Through art installations\, an exhibition\, workshops\, talks and family activities visitors can discover more about the history and uses of this versatile material. \nLiz Clay is one of the featured artists telling her story of working with wool in Trevor Pitt’s film ‘Somerset Yarning’. The film will be screened on a loop in the Museum’s 14th century Abbey Barn throughout the exhibition. \nIn the Mapstone Gallery Liz’s couture work will be on show alongside contemporary makers working with wool. British wool plays a significant role in Liz’s designs. Inspired by the textures and colours of this sustainable and beautiful material Liz showcases the diversity and quality of these wools.

SUMMARY:Extra dates! Felt and the Found Object object By Anita Larkin Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Anita will lead students in learning practical ways of making sculptural assemblages from their found objects. Students will use effective hand-tool methods\, cutting\, modelling\, screwing\, wiring\, and riveting things together\, as they look at ways that narrative can evolve from joining disparate objects together. Skills in using the Dremel and modelling materials to make seamless joins between objects will be shared. The workshop follows on from this object assemblage to explore various methods of felting around parts of the sculpture. Anita will share different ways to accommodate the migration of the fibres around a solid object\, thereby achieving a felt skin of integrity around it. A pleasing contrast of hard materials against the softness of the felt can be observed when parts of the object are left to protrude\, or an object may be left entirely enshrouded in its felt skin. The class will discuss how sculptural assemblage of found objects and the incorporation of felt around sections of them\, can lead to unexpected and emotive narratives in artworks.

SUMMARY:Extra datums! Felt as Substance By Anita Larkin Johnson
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores looking at wool fibres and felt from the point of view of being a substance for sculpture that can interact with other substances and build upon itself similar to clay. Learn the skill of skin-felting to make hollow sculptural felt forms directly by hand without the use of a plastic resist. This method allows for complex shapes to be modelled in 3 dimensions directly. This class will also explore the ways that numerous substances interact with the surface of finished felt vessels. Apply gold leaf\, silicone\, wax\, burning\, putty\, tar\, and other substances to felt forms that can transform that felted shape into an object of structural strength\, intrigue\, and beauty. This workshop will leave the felt artist with many new ideas for future felt projects.

SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's workshop: Sculpting Hollow Felt Forms
DESCRIPTION:In this 5-day in person workshop learn technique for layout/wrapping of various 2D resist template shapes in a consistent thinness of wool fiber while simultaneously integrating distinct areas of denser layout and partial felt shapes to explore differences of shrinkage as a means of sculpting surface relief and hollow form. In addition to raising form and varying the shrinkage of the form’s wall\, applying perimetral fulling of the incorporated partial felt allows one to alter the surface to achieve deeply concave and protuberant curves while sculpting forms previously unimaginable. Participants will make partial felt in varying thicknesses and states of structural integrity to cut and apply in their fiber layout. \nStudents will focus on raising a form from a single 2-D plane\, sculpting various hollow forms from a circular template\, and expand possibilities through various template shapes while exploring 3-D partial felts! Proper fulling\, the thickness of the vessel’s wall in relationship to its surface area and interior volume and the amount of and placement of denser areas of partial felt as structural support will determine the forms integrity. Hand stitched structural ribbing\, steam blocking and shellac stiffening can then be applied to further refine the forms posture and presence.

SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's workshop\, Felt: Depth of Surface/Depth of Field
DESCRIPTION:5-day in person workshop at a destination craft school on a working farm. Explore thickness of layout and densities of partially felted sheets of wool for patterning effects\, texture resists and edging techniques when fusing wool through fabrics. Incorporate surprising substrates and a variety to be used to trap found objects under and in fabric pockets to add strategic weight\, defined shape\, dimension and color. Free-motion embroidery will be applied to offer finer detailing and to compress remaining airspace in the felt creating an embossed effect. These studies/samples of intensive techniques are suggested as a focal point in a larger field of felt\, for example: a jacket cuff\, a shirt collar\, a bag flap\, an aspect of a wall hanging and/or a jewelry component. \nNot for novice felters. Intermediate & Advance participants having experience with laying out thin and evenly and looking to develop new aesthetics through structural play of felt\, fabric and stitch.\n**Wet felting is a physically demanding process. Participants should be comfortable standing; have shoulder\, arm and hand strength/mobility; be comfortable with having their hands in wet/soapy conditions for hours and exposed to hot and cold water. **

SUMMARY:Felt Lampshades
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to create a unique piece of home decor to complement your home and learn two new skills – Feltmaking and Lampshade making! \nDay One: Using merino or a native breed wool with additional yarns and fibres such as silk\, linen and soya – you will design and make a piece of felt fabric. You will learn how to lay the wool and other fibres and apply wet felting techniques to bond the fibres together. You can choose neutral tones\, bright jewel colours\, abstract patterns or more pictoral elements to create your unique design. At the end of this first half day session you will have a piece of flat fabric which you will go on to make your bespoke lampshade with. \nDay Two: Using the felt fabric prepared in the first session you will make your lampshade. Learning how to cut your felt fabric to size\, adhere a fire resistant backing and shade rings\, to construct your lampshade. This session will give you a basic understanding of how to make a drum lampshade\, equipped with these new skills\, you can apply this knowledge to future projects with confidence. \nIf you have a stash of yarns\, fabric or other material\, and which of us that love textiles doesn’t\, do bring along any bits you’d like to incorporate into your work. Prior to the first session consider what colour\, pattern and design you would like your shade to have by collecting images\, making sketches and notes. \nAll materials and equipment are provided. Illustrated handouts notes are offered to enable you to continue to practice what you learn during the workshop. No previous felting experience is required. All abilities are welcomed as this workshop is especially suitable for beginners and those wishing to extend their felting practice. \nThis is a two day workshop starting on Saturday 1st June 2024 10am – 2pm and finishing the following day Sunday 2nd June 2024 10am – 2pm

To date this has been a process of researching how to eradicate any last vestiges of lavae and prevent future infestations. We have clarified which wools were used to make the rug and selected the wool type most suitable to repair it. This has involved understanding the dyes used\, the strength and durability of the wool needed and how the rug was originally assembled. It has and continues to be a steep learning curve\, and has provided interesting insights into the changing use of dyes\, from natural to acid dyes in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union during the last hundred years. \nWe have now moved onto the actual repair stage now\, needle felting the new wool into the front and back of the holes and tracks eaten away by the lava. To help prevent the work becoming overwhelming\, Grace has stitched a grid across the rug so we can work methodical\, focusing on one area at at time. We are meeting fortnightly at The Old Printworks in Baslall Heath (Birmingham) and approaching this part of the restoration as a community project\, inviting people to join in and learn about felting along the way. If you are interested in taking part please message me for further details. \nEveryone is welcome to come along\, see & chat about the project and have a go at repairing the rug. These are very friendly\, informal sessions. You can drop in for one off visits\, come for multiple sessions\, when you can\, be it an hour or for the whole morning you are very welcome. Come along & get involved with the repair project\, it’s very therapeutic! \nHeld at The Old Print Works in Birmingham\, B12 9AH from 9:30-12noon\nThe next meet up dates are;\nApril 24th\nMay 1st\,\nMay 15th\nMay 29th. \nPlease let Grace know by messaging (07983 705793)\, when you’d like to come\, so she can let you into the building.
