DESCRIPTION:Here are the next felted wool courses bu Atelier Nicomy in January 2025\, in the medieval city of Crémieu in northern Isère\, France. \n🍄 SATURDAY JANUARY 11\, introduction to the traditional technique of wet felting using water and soap. Open to all\, beginners welcome. Morning creation of a wool painting. Afternoon\, volume felting (mushrooms or hand puppet). Cost : 95€ / per person for the day. \n🪸 SUNDAY JANUARY 12\, level 1 course for people who have already felted. “Research and animated surfaces”. We will create a painting whose surface will bring together felting tests of different fibers and materials (textiles\, plants …)\, material tests using reserves (scales …) Cost : 95€ / per person for the day. \n👍 MONDAY 13 & TUESDAY 14 JANUARY\, level 2 course / experienced.\nPossibility to participate in one day or two days\, depending on the project envisaged. I propose a one-day project: creation of a hanging plant in volume. Or a 2-day project: creation of a large graphic painting in wool\, “stained glass rendering” (use of pre-felts…). DESCRIPTION:In this workshop we want to explore various felting techniques for 3 dimensional felt pieces.\nAfter an experimental phase you will design your own personal wallhanging and realize it step by step. Felt is a wonderful material for decorative interior design\, brings warmth into the room and has a sound absorbing effect.\nAs a special feature\, this time we want to focus on the combination of 2 or 3 pieces that will go together in one installation. On one hand\, this will make the felting process a bit easier for you\, not having to full one large and heavy piece\, and we can e njoy discovering many different ways of how several pieces can communicate with each other. Hanging more than one object together on one wall\, they will start to “talk” to each other and the space in between becomes part of the installation. Based on many years of experience and skills in sculptural felting I will give advice and support with choosing suitable techniques and guide you through the felting process.\nYou may use wool of your own production or locally prevalent wool types and discover a good way to value their quality. In 2022 we already did some investigation in this field and created a sample book with a variety of wool combinations. This can help you to get an idea of felt quality and textures that can be achieved with several wool types.\nStudents who prefer to use other types of wool are of course welcome\, too\, and can do the same with their favourite materials or types of fibres they are not familiar with so far and want to\ndo more investigations in this direction.\nIn general I’d recommend to combine batts and tops\, short fibered fleece for the body of the felt and the long fibers of combed sliver to define stability and shape.

SUMMARY:Felted Wall Art with Chris Lines
DESCRIPTION:This 2 day workshop will extend your design skills and build your confidence: how to compose with the basic design elements in an abstract or semi-abstract way\, without it all coming down to ‘happy accidents’. All these skills can be applied more consciously in your chosen form\, be they images\, garments\, or objects. Revel in the visual and tactile pleasures of felt-making on a scale that enables you to explore design without large-scale physical effort.\nMy workshops will give you a mental workout\, rather than a physical one!  \nIn this workshop you will be able to utilise some of your favourite techniques\, such as Nuno with fabrics and paper\, including those you have dyed or printed yourself; stitch/embroidery; ‘cracked earth’ using resists; and shibori textures to create small 3D elements;  if you choose to do so. We will also discuss finishing options\, such as edging\, backing and hanging.  \nIf you would like to add a small photographic element this is possible by prior arrangement.  \nSo that we can make the most of the two days\, when you sign up for the workshop\, you will be given further information to help you prepare\, including a preliminary look at your ideas in a one-to-one correspondence with Chris. The aim is not to put in everything you’ve ever learned but to be able to select and use the techniques you enjoy in a more artistic\, personal and creative way.

DESCRIPTION:During this workshop\, you will make a series of 2-D felt pieces from which small samples (approximately 15 x 15cm) are selected. These will form the jumping off point for a deeper exploration of felt making techniques and effects\, as well as contrast and composition\, and become the basis for a very personal line of inquiry. This workshop is not about achieving a particular outcome\, but rather about the joy of responding in the moment and learning through play\, trial and “error”. It is intended to give you the freedom and time to explore\, experiment that is so often lacking in our daily life\, and to deepen your understanding of the medium. You will develop the beginnings of a reference library of techniques and ideas to enable future projects\, which can continue to grow at home. A wide range of materials may be incorporated into the samples\, and you will be encouraged to think outside the box.

DESCRIPTION:PRACTICAL LEARNING \nDuring this technical master class\, you will learn how to calculate\, design and create a base resist template which will become the starting point for an animal mask that aims to be as realistic as possible.  A wide variety of animals may be created\, with a corresponding wide range of techniques\, including textural and sculptural effects\, the application of fur and hair\, fins\, horns and more.  \nParticipants in this master class will learn how to achieve facial symmetry\, experiment with different types of protrusions and colour\, how to build up features and markings and create plumage/fur/hair\, how to assemble all the 3-dimensional parts together\, how to achieve concave and convex planes\, and how to sculpt and shape the felt into a coherent animal form. You will be guided through the techniques step by step\, and will benefit from the wide variety of animals created (and wide variety of techniques used) by your student cohorts. Learning is supported through practical demonstrations\, regular and in-depth one-to-one consultations and practical help\, handouts and illustrated explanations.  \nYou need to come prepared for hard work as well as plenty of fun (!)\, and are expected to bring inspirational photographs and sketches\, samples\, ready-prepared elements (if appropriate)\, ready-made signage and appropriate clothing for the photography session.
