Fissure II – Nuno Felted Scarves
Inspired by the Icelandic landscape, this workshop focuses on making a nuno felted scarf by creating fissure patterns and complex surface textures. During my visit to Iceland in 2019, I was struck by the juxtaposition of the rugged landscapes with the fragility of the environment, and the precarious existence of life on the island. Based on Canadian smocking, these techniques do not lend themselves to a real time workshop. Therefore, I have chosen to offer a demonstration where I will explain three different pleating techniques and how to apply them to make scarves. I will record the demonstration for students to refer back to, or watch later, if they cannot attend in person. I will explain how to prepare felt for the pleating, how to create the pleats and finish with various dyeing methods.
