In this masterclass, you’ll use felt to construct a wall-hanging or free-standing object that is intended to be lit up from beyond – either behind or below. Taking inspiration from Charlotte’s architectural pieces, and from your own research, you will develop three-dimensional structures on the front and back of a felted panel. When the panel is lit from underneath or behind, the hidden details embedded within the surface construction will be revealed, and take on a spectacular, almost X-ray-like appearance.…

This masterclass explores two methods of textile design on fabric in combination with feltmaking. Employing a natural soda bath, referred to as scouring, you’ll learn how to erase the negative to produce patterning on white and various colours of silk organza. After that you’ll experiment with markmaking using water-soluble soot ink (called ‘Sumi’ in Japanese).
