SUMMARY:Lisa Klakulak's 4 day Sculpting Hollow Forms with Extreme Differential Shrinkage
DESCRIPTION:Learn technique for layout/wrapping of various 2D resist template shapes in a consistent thinness of wool fiber while simultaneously integrating distinct areas of denser partial felt shapes to exploring extreme differential shrinkage as a means of sculpting surface relief and unique hollow form. Participants will make partially felted sheets of fiber in varying thicknesses and states of structural integrity to cut and apply strategically in their fiber layout. Studies will focus on perimetral agitation to raise form from a single 2D plane\, sculpt a variety of hollow forms from a circular template and expanding possibilities with altered template shapes. Proper fulling\, the thickness of the vessel’s wall in relationship to its surface area and interior volume and the amount of and placement of denser areas of partial felt as structural support will determine the forms integrity. Hand stitched structural ribbing\, steam blocking and shellac stiffening will be addressed can then be applied to further refine the form’s posture and presence.

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we’ll be making awesome autumnal pumpkins for your home! Have your pick of pumpkin colouring and accessories\, this workshop is perfect for beginners to felting!\nAll materials and tools will be provided for you\, just bring your creativity (and a little money if you want food/drink from the pub!).\nIf you’ve never felted before but always wanted to\, this will be a great session to give it a try!\nIt will be held in the main back room at the Crown\, Asfordby\, starting at 18:00 and finishing around 20:30.\nSpaces are limited so message me to reserve yours now! £30 pp\nSome things to be aware of:\n– Due to the sharp items involved in this craft (needles and scissors)\, the minimum age for attendees is 16 years old. Minors can participate if accompanied by an adult\, please assess your own child’s ability for safely handling sharp objects.\n– We will be using various breeds of sheep wool\, if you are allergic to wool/animal hair and wish to participate\, please bring a mask/gloves and make the facilitator aware. If applicable\, please also bring your epi-pen.\n– Health & safety has been assessed and will be debriefed at the start of the workshop. A written assessment is available.\n– Public / Products Liability Insurance has been provided by the IFA (International Feltmakers Association)\, certificate available on request.\n– Needles can occasionally break\, each participant has a two needle courtesy replacement limit\, any further breakages can be replaced during the workshop at £1 per needle.\n– Payment is required upfront\, spaces will not be held with non-payment. We’ve had such a good a response that we are now offering a choice of two dates which are Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th October. If you want to really immerse yourself in this project you might even want book on both these dates! \nSusan works with natural fibres and fabrics\, layering them with her own hand-dyed merino fibre to create beautiful\, textural pictures.\nIn the morning we will have fun experimenting with various fibres\, fabrics and techniques and after lunch we will move on to making our own wet-felted landscape. The felting process is very straight-forward so is accessible to all levels of experience. \nSusan will bring a variety of materials for you to use including her own spun/dyed yarns and fibres. You will need your basic felting gear plus a photo to base your design on. DESCRIPTION:Learn how I create my wet felt landscapes\, and create a beautiful piece of fabric to frame or make into something special. \nYou will be guided to lay out and felt a layered image on silk chiffon\, using the beautiful merino wool tops\, locks\, nepps\, mohair & silks in my extensive stash! You will also have the option to try layering in fabric pieces and yarns. \nYour finished piece will be approx. 26cm x 20cm & can be further embellished at home. \nBring an image of a special place\, a sketch or simply let the materials & your imagination guide you. \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners\, but will also bring something new to your felting if you have some experience. The session will give plenty of time to enjoy the process as well as the option to learn further techniques. \nThe gorgeous Deer Park workshop room overlooks the surrounding countryside and is filled with natural light – the perfect space for our workshop! Places are limited to 6\, and each workshopper will have their own table and workspace. \nI have reserved a table in the onsite café for lunch\, and we can pre-order on arrival (to be paid on the day). DESCRIPTION:Learn how I create my wet felt landscapes\, and create a beautiful piece of fabric to frame or make into something special. \nYou will be guided to lay out and felt a layered image on silk chiffon\, using the beautiful merino wool tops\, locks\, nepps\, mohair & silks in my extensive stash! You will also have the option to try layering in fabric pieces and yarns. \nYour finished piece will be approx. 26cm x 20cm & can be further embellished at home. \nBring an image of a special place\, a sketch or simply let the materials & your imagination guide you. \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners\, but will also bring something new to your felting if you have some experience. The session will give plenty of time to enjoy the process as well as the option to learn further techniques. \nWe’ll be in the upstairs function room of this beautiful\, Georgian townhouse\, overlooking the Pavilion Gardens and Opera House. There’s plenty of natural light in this cosy but spacious room above the tearooms – a great space for our workshop\, but please note that stairs are unavoidable! Places are limited to just 6 so that everyone gets plenty of support and attention from me. \nAs we’re above the tearooms\, the price of this workshop includes a sandwich lunch and tea with homemade scones\, as well as the usual tea\, coffee and biscuits. SUMMARY:Felted Hebridean Fleece Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Trish O’Meara of Wormit Woolies will lead you through the ancient craft of wet felting to create your very own one of a kind felted fleece rug from the fleece of a living Hebridean sheep\, grown here at Guardswell Farm. Hebridean sheep are small\, hardy Scottish sheep that produce beautiful dark fleece with a mix of brown\, black and sometimes hints of grey.  \nWet felting is the oldest form of textile making and has been recognized as a heritage craft in the UK since the 1100’s. It has a rich history in Scotland with something known as ‘Waulking”. Waulking\, also known as fulling\, is a traditional Scottish process of soaking the fabric in water\, followed by rhythmic beating and kneading\, typically accompanied by singing Gaelic songs. This process makes the fabric denser and more durable.   \nThis is a practical workshop but you’ll also get loads of theory along the way. Come prepared for an upper body workout and wear comfortable clothes and appropriate footwear as felting can be physically demanding with part of the process taking place outside. You will be provided with a plastic apron along with everything else needed to create your very own one of a kind felted fleece rug. \nWe are hosting this workshop in the beautiful Guardswell Glasshouse and will provide a delicious tea + coffee + cake break

SUMMARY:Wool in The Wolds
DESCRIPTION:“Wool in The Wolds” is Lamorna’s first solo exhibition – a collection of both 2D and 3D creations to show many different ways of using wool with other fibres such as mulberry bark\, woven linen and sari silk offcuts. The inspiration for this creative wealth has been the move North to live in The Lincolnshire Wolds (and build her own garden). As with many artists\, the big skies in this open landscape have a lot to do with stimulating her artistic expression. The geology and agriculture of The Wolds also play a part in the development of her work.  \nIn tandem with this exhibition she will be running 5 felting workshops for people to learn how to create wall hangings\, like those exhibited. \nCaistor Arts and Heritage Centre opening hours\nMonday to Friday 9.30 am to 4 pm; Saturday and Sunday 10.00 am to 4 pm

DESCRIPTION:This 4-day preparatory workshop has been developed in response to student requests and is highly recommended for those wishing to try out colour\, eye types\, hair\, fur\, plumage\, surface techniques and other special effects in preparation for making a full animal mask. \nWhether you are about to embark on your first animal mask\, or you have wet felted a mask with me before\, this workshop is an ideal opportunity to research specific aspects of your chosen animal\, develop appropriate technical responses\,  and to practise them on small samples before working on the mask itself. This eliminates some risk factors and will save you me later on\, and will give you a beer understanding of the final outcome you are trying to achieve.

SUMMARY:TREE BARKS IN FELT with GLADYS PAULUS
DESCRIPTION:This 4-day workshop looks to the world of trees as a starng point for exploring textures\, surface relief and experimental layering. There are thought to be 73\,000 tree species globally\, among which 9\,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America.  \nWith such a huge inspiraon source\, there are years of inspiraon ahead for any arst/designer. For this workshop however\, we’ll have to narrow it down to 1 or 2 tree species! We’ll study these thoroughly\, and explore ways and techniques to translate their beauty into felt.

SUMMARY:Get in Line: Community Canvas
DESCRIPTION:This installation explores the tension between individuality and conformity\, inspired by the phrases “get in line” and “fall in line.” In today’s polarized world\, “falling in line” often implies blind obedience—something I resist both personally and politically. The figures in this line defy that notion. Each one is a unique character\, crafted through layered fiber art techniques including felting\, weaving\, surface design\, and stitch. Their differences are not only visible—they’re celebrated.  When viewers press a switch in a figure’s hand\, lights illuminate parts of their bodies. This act of connection—joining hands and literally lighting up the world—is at the heart of the work. We “get in line” together\, as individuals\, toward something joyful\, communal\, and alive.  These figures could never “fall in line.” They are too textured\, too weird\, too wonderful—just as people should be.

DESCRIPTION:6 days to learn original techniques for working with felt in the south of France from August 28 to September 3\, 2025 in residence in Montbrun-Bocage.\nFELT PERCEIVED AS A SUBSTANCE 3-day workshop from August 28 to 30\, 2025\nDuring this workshop you will explore the study of wool fibers and felt approached as a substance for sculpture which can interact with other substances and construct itself in the manner of clay. Learn to create hollow felt sculptural shapes directly by hand without using plastic resin. This method makes it possible to directly model complex shapes in 3 dimensions.\nThis course will also explore how many substances interact with the surface of finished felt receptors. You will apply gold leaf\, silicone\, wax\, putty\, tar and other substances to felt shapes\, which will transform this felt shape into an object of another structure.\nDESIGN IDEAS FOR FELTMAKERS 3-day workshop from September 1 to 3\, 2025\nHow can felt makers create innovative shapes and new designs?\nThis creative workshop begins with fun methods of drawing\, doodling and collage on paper. Collage methods (cutting\, reassembly and serendipitous occurrence) can be an interesting way to develop spare patterns which are then used to create felt shapes. The initial inspiration will come from the observation of everyday objects.\nAnita will then guide students through fun ways to develop a three-dimensional felt shape from two-dimensional drawings. The intricacies of calculating and planning a unique reserve form will be shared with each student based on their own project as it evolves. DESCRIPTION:Jenny and Pat will be hosting their annual Summer School in Arnesby Village Hall on the 5th and 6th of August. Think of it as a two day Play Day with the opportunity to get to meet other members\, work on your own projects\, swap ideas\, tips\, etc. I’ve attended a few of these in the past and it’s been great to have the opportunity to spend two days felting (uninterrupted!🥳) and very inspiring to see what others are working on too.\nIt’s £10 for the two days and if you’d like to book\, or simply want more information\, please contact Pat Screaton patscreaton@gmail.com or 07860106999
