DAGMAR BINDER south of France Wallhangings or felt objects inspired by botanical structures
21 July - 23 July
Workshop for experienced felters (3 days)
Wallhangings or felt objects inspired by botanical structures
In this class we will explore various possibilities of translating a natural object or structure into felt art.
Students should please bring found natural artefacts (or photos of them) that will serve as an inspiration for your felt works.
Day 1, we will have a close look at these models, find out which aspects are the most interesting for you and discuss suitable technique(s) for producing these structures in felt.
We will think about material combinations and important details in the layout of fibres, in order to prepare the prefelt for specific shaping or deformations. In most cases, you will also need some type of resists to produce 3-
dimensional forms. We will develop the necessary shapes for each of you and make a plan for their combination.
A few samples will help to start a bigger project the next day.
Day 2 and 3 are dedicated to realise your individual felted object or wallhanging. From time to time, we will have a look at the different works and talk about important technical details, options and/or difficulties and try to find
solutions for tricky situations.
This way, all participants can learn from each other, understand parallels and differences of several ways of working and find more confidence in the permanent dialogue between the felt and the maker.
With the knowledge of this workshop, you will be able to plan future projects independently, choose suitable materials, techniques and resists, for either fine art or wearable felt works.
