Black and White to Infinity with Jorie Johnson
August 19 - August 23£495
This masterclass explores two methods of textile design on fabric in combination with feltmaking. Employing a natural soda bath, referred to as scouring, you’ll learn how to erase the negative to produce patterning on white and various colours of silk organza. After that you’ll experiment with markmaking using water-soluble soot ink (called ‘Sumi’ in Japanese). The ink can be applied to fabric by brush and/or homemade marking tools to produce unique expressions.
With the assortment of original fabrics, you’ll move on to working in the addition of coloured wool with traditional feltmaking techniques of lamination.
Participants can then choose whether to continue preparing fabrics or develop their feltmaking skills under the guidance of the tutor. You will leave with original artworks for framing or expand your array of fabric samples into 3D objects or vessels.
During the week, Jorie will give talks and demonstrations to introduce the various applications she has found over the years for these simple but unique techniques which can be applied to your own felt work.
