Big Ink: 4-day Felt Garment Class with Fiona Duthie

July 7 - July 10

Big Ink is all about creating bold dramatic surfaces on garments that engage the wearer and the viewer. This is design that celebrates life and movement! We explore inks and paints for printing and drawing on textiles to add form, depth and line. Seamless garment design will be covered encompassing colour, form and fit, plus using resist additions and pleating for additional shaping and fit. Collar, sleeves and hood design will be covered, as well as tools and techniques to get the best fit in a simple garment. Refined felt making to achieve exacting end results. Participants can make either a dress, vest, tunic, skirt or short jacket.

Fiona Duthie is a felt maker recognized for her dynamic sculptural clothing and artwork, and as an enthusiastic, comprehensive and generous instructor. She first encountered felt making in 1996 and immediately it became her medium and passion. She loves storytelling, both in words and textiles and communicates that narrative through surface design in felt making. She strives to make the highest quality felt possible in all her work, from the lightest weight, drape-able garments to structural, durable outdoor felt installations. Fiona has a full-time studio practice based on Salt Spring Island, BC and has exhibited her work in Canada, the US, New Zealand, the UK, and Australia.
