3d structural wallhangings – Multi-layer techniques for seamless felt objects
5 October - 8 October

In this class we want to explore different techniques of multi-layer surfaces in feltmaking, which can be applied to wearables as well as fine art objects.
With a few samples, we will have a look at the basic components that will play an important role in the planning of your wallhanging, check the characteristics of different wool types, experiment with several ways of laying out fibers and see, how the initial setting influences consistency and the final shape of a piece of felt.
Using resists and planning their positions will require some spatial thinking and imagination of how the structure will unfold later.
Please bring ideas, photo(s) or sketches (f.ex. of natural objects or structures) that inspire you and can be a starting point for your creation. Together we will have a close look at these sketches, find out which aspects are the most interesting for you and discuss suitable technique(s).
There’s always more than one way to go… Playing with rhythms of repeated elements, color or texture contrast, flexible or stiff felt… offers a variety of options. Instead of one large wallhanging, which reqires some physical strength to full it, you may also think of a group of smaller objects that refer to each other.
During the layout and felting process, from time to time, we will have a look at the different works and talk about important technical details, options and/or difficulties and try to find solutions for tricky situations. This way, all participants can learn from each other, understand parallels and differences of several ways of working and find more confidence in their personal dialogue between the felt and the maker.
With the knowledge of this workshop, you will be able to plan future projects more independently, choose suitable materials, techniques and resists, for either fine art or wearable felt works.
