Artwork One
Title: Crowning Glory
Materials and Techniques: Materials used include a variety of natural fibres, snippets of natural and synthetic fabrics, paint, beads, wire and a metal hand band. Techniques used include wet felting, Nuno felting, cutting, painting, hand sewing, beading and wiring. The three individual pieces that form this Fascinator have been securely and invisibly stitched together by hand.
Inspiration: The theme of this exhibition was the spark that led to me thinking about how I could “connect” pieces of existing work to create something entirely different and unique. This wet felted Fascinator was constructed by connecting three individual projects. The wider section at the base was originally a necklace, the mid section was a matching bangle and the top section was a splash.
Artwork Two
Title: Biomorphia
Materials and Techniques: Materials used include Merino and carded Corriedale fibres, commercial and hand made prefelt, fully felted snippets leftover from previous projects, wool slubs, acrylic wallpaper, dried seaweed. Techniques used include wet felting around a resist, creating flat prefelt, cords and felt balls, connecting prefelts of varying layers and shapes, differential shrinkage and using different coloured layers of fibre to reveal when cut.
Inspiration: The title “Connections” immediately made me think of how we can create and then connect multiple prefelts to produce undulating three dimensional shapes and exciting surface decoration. Within this form there are over 60 individual pieces of prefelt or fully felted scraps that have been connected by the process of wet felting to create a unique, organic form.
