North American Downy Woodpecker

Needle and wet felting techniques were used to make this sculpture. I used merino wool and wire to create the downy woodpecker. I used a variety of wool breeds (merino, bergschaf, and corriedale) and cotton scrim to create the lichen-covered tree bark.

Much of my work is inspired by nature, from the subjects of my needle felted sculptures to the textures and colors I use in my wet felted creations. This piece in particular was inspired by a regular visitor to my garden, the tiny but plucky downy woodpecker. I chose this design as it demonstrates my needle and wet felting work.
