City and Guilds Feltmaking Courses

City & Guilds offer a comprehensive series of four courses on feltmaking taking students from an introduction to the craft through to a diploma involving the preparation of a professional portfolio. The courses are offered in different areas of the UK.

Level 1

Certificate in Feltmaking

30 hours of guided tuition

Level 2

Certificate in Feltmaking

120 guided hours

Level 3

Certificate in Feltmaking

210 guided hours

Level 4

Diploma in Feltmaking

210 guided hours

What do these courses offer?

Level 1 is intended as an introduction to the craft and is intended for students with little or no previous experience of feltmaking.

Level 2 aims to provide students with a sound knowledge of a range feltmaking techniques and an understanding of fibre characteristics. It includes a short design module leading to the production of planned felt pieces.

Level 3 aims to develop skills of the serious feltmaker. Design considerations become more important and the emphasis is on planning and developing individual pieces and resolved projects. Studying the work of artists and other feltmakers is also included.

Level 3 Diploma is for the dedicated feltmaker who aims for the highest level of practice is feltmaking. The emphasise is on applying the design and craft skills acquired in the certificate course while developing as an individual felt artist.

Throughout all these course students are required to evaluate their own work.

Where can I study?

Unfortunately due to reduction of funding in adult education these courses are not available in all areas but are well worth seeking out as they offer a sound basis for the serious study of felt. Some centres offer tuition on a one day a week basis, others a series of weekend sessions and distance learning courses are occasionally available.
