Just noticed free day - we are near Berrington Hall which has a good costume collection, worth asking curators if they have other archived materials - its free so worth a sunny afternoon pop in to ask! Or a great excuse to have a lovely walk in gorgeous grounds - maybe with some fleece in your wellies?

I've had a word with our exhibitions officer and she says that you won't get into trouble!

I don't know whether it's an urban myth that drivers are given a 10% cushion of tolerance for speeding offences, but as we're all familiar with the vagaries of feltmaking I think it's only reasonable that we adopt a similar policy.

The IFA now has a Facebook page which is open to everyone - it can be found here - https://www.facebook.com/pages/International-Feltmakers-Association/207453496012841

I will be starting a Facebook group soon which will be limited to IFA members only so you can use that facility to network too.

all the best

What topic to discuss?
Looking for ideas as to how to use felted cords. Seen Annemie's booklets.
Been asked to run an open workshop - thought felted cords would suit best, thinking of children.
Any ideas apart from bracelets?

Topic : Anti-pilling agent....

I'm looking for advice on what to use to prevent my felt products from pilling/bobbling.

I have read the vinegar rinsing post below and wonder if as well as making the felt smooth, it actively helps to keep the fibres intact for any length of time??

I know of a product by a company called TanTech, a felting finishing wash, which I imagine would do the trick. However, the cost of posting a bottle of the stuff from the US to the UK is twice the amount of the product itself! As such I'm a bit reluctant to cough up the cash if there may be an alternative. Or a UK-based supplier.

Any ideas or wisdom anyone??

Nicola.

I'm new here and used to more proactive and busy forums.
Have noticed several members would like membership lists.
The easiest way to do this is to add yourself.

I have filled in my profile; members who are logged in can find a link to my website there.
I found that I had to make a post, then I could click on my picture or name and gain access to the edit profile area ( is there a simpler way?).

I'm Laura Searle,
live and work on the Somerset Wiltshire border, not far from Longleat.

Pjpanda,
You can fill in your profile information by clicking on your picture or name.
This will only be visible members so is fairly safe.
More public listing of members details can be made by putting a post in the contact other feltmakers section, this can be reached from the forum homepage.
If we want a list, lets make one

As stated in an earlier Post, I readily agree to having a member's list. It can contain the e mail address and location of the studio. Part of being a member is to learn about other felters and commnicate with them. I would be delighted to have fellow members visit me and my studio if they are ever in Colorado.
If there are members who do not want the information published, they can opt out. But, I bet many of the members will want to be a part of it.

Topic : Who Knows how far back felt-making dates back to?

This is a section of text from early work produced for my degree.

Felt has evolved significantly since ancient nomadic people made and used this inspirational material to create tents, clothing and protective covers. Felt, created from wool or other animal fibres, is a non-toxic, non-polluting, protective and decorative, flexible material requiring simple techniques to produce, making it an eco-friendly, cheap and effective product. (App.B).

Traditionally there were three types of nomadic people; hunter-gatherers moving between hunting grounds, pastoral people moving between pastures, and peripatetic folk (more common in industrialized nations) moving between trading opportunities. Pastoralists raised herds and moved with them so that the pasture had time to recover. The domestication of horses allowed nomadic steppe tribes to cover great distances quickly in an extreme continental climate and the use of felt allowed them to cope with the severe weather conditions. Horses became the common currency of traders followed by sheep, which also offered meat, skin, wool and milk.

Felt has been found in tombs dated 3,000 years ago. The Hermitage museum has a sadle 5C BC .
Research online will unearth many images of felt held
in major museums around the world.

A list of members names, country of origin and the region would be useful so that interested people can then search out further info about the felter using other means. This would not need email addresses or other contact details to be provided.
Felters who are proactive often have their own websites, workshops etc.

There is no right or wrong way top make felt. I have done it with rush mats and net curtain, on just bubble wrap and even on plastic builders dust sheet, recently I was also persuaded to use windbreak fabric. I find they all have there merits. I am however bias I learned on plain bubble wrap and the multiple equipment methods are avoided at all costs! Find what works for you............. Don't be put off by others!

The issue of a membership list accessible to all members has been raised repeatedly and has been discussed by the committee. Regional Coordinators were asked to canvas their members to gauge opinion as to whether members details should be circulated. Of those who responded, several RCs said that their members were happy for their details to be shared, but a significant proportion was unhappy at the idea. A major concern was the harvesting of email addresses.

The idea of a 'tick box' was discussed and is certainly being considered.

Your assertion that certain committee members do have access to members details is correct, but access is limited to what is necessary for administrative purposes.

As you rightly point out, we are not a 'secret society' and the sharing of information within the IFA is possible in several ways. Anyone wishing to share their details is welcome to post their request here on the forum, members have the option to post free classified ads on the website and members are able to contact Regional Coordinators from any region to request that their details be passed to the members of that region.

This is ridiculous it is 2011 and we are not a secret society let us have a members list out there in the public domain.
After all the committee have access to private email addresses etc to contact you when they wish so why not the ability to contact other members.

On the joining form you should have a tick box to mark if you wish to be excluded from it.The IFA is the members not the committee running it at any one time and it is maybe something all members should now be asked about not just at AGM.

Hello to all :-D

There are several feltmakers I find inspiring, but the ones who spring to mind at the moment are Claire Cawte, who works with felting into textured and natural fabrics, Andrea Hunter, Bailey Curtis, Lizzie Houghton, Sheila Smith and Jeannette Appleton - all for different reasons.
There are others too whose names elude me right now.....

Hello to all!

I feel a little isolated felting-wise!
Sadly, I can't afford, or get to, the occasional workshops which are nearest to me - usually held in Nutfield - but would love to get together with other local felters with a view to finding a venue for regular felting sessions, maybe on a monthly basis. It would be great to be able to learn from each other, develop and consolidate skills and techniques and try new ones together.
I don't drive much, but anywhere accessible by train or bus is fine :)

Anyone interested?

*waits with bated breath*

Topic : Bubblewrap, beach mat, nylon curtaining....?

Hello felters,

A friend of mine wanted to do some felting with her class of primary school children and I lent her some basic felting books. However, techniques vary and each felter seems to have a preferred method, which is confusing!

I was taught to lay out/wet out the fleece tops in a sandwich of nylon net or curtaining and then roll in inside a beach mat. Periodically we had to lift the curtaining to make sure it wasn't felting into the fleece. I assumed this was THE way to do it for a while, but that was many years ago and I have since met others who use bubblewrap only and won't use slatted beach/felting mats. Others lay out fleece on plastic and rub gently with their fingers till stable and then roll in plastic, using a pole through the whole roll. So now I am confused. IS there a best/definitive way, or is it personal preference? Are there advantages and disadvantages? And are there even more ways of felting that I haven't come across yet?

Hello to all,

I realise I've posted a similar request on another IF forum! Though this thread is in any case a few years old now and as far as I can see, nothing has come of it, so my update might be a timely (and gentle!) reminder!

Would LOVE to see a members' Contacts Board!<3

Hello to all. I don't know if this is the right place to post this suggestion, but I thought it would help members if we had a 'Contacts Wanted' board so that we were able to see where there are nearby felters who might like to meet, either occasionally or regularly.
I would love to join a local felters' group, but live too far from my nearest one and rely on public transport.
So can I start the ball rolling?

I am Judith, and I live in Shirley, Surrey, near Croydon. I would love to meet other felters in the area - Croydon, Beckenham, Bromley or thereabouts. I haven't done much feltmaking for a while but intend to make a start very soon ( my daughter wants a wall hanging for her house) and would love to exchange ideas, inspiration and skills.

Now it's your turn. Any takers?<g>

my guess would be as "old as the hills" - man/woman has always had to cloth themselves in someway, and this would have been a fairly intuitive discovery as often felt comes from the back of sheep directly...

I have just read this thread - I obtained the logo I used on my website from someone else's personal website not from this website - but will now remove. Unfortunately the set up from my web pages is such that text links aren't very effective - can you suggest another image that I could use instead?

All I am trying to achieve is to promote your website and felting in general - I am not a professional felter. Even though I earn my living from textile crafts I am totally new to this subject and just want to encourage others to find you.

Best wishes

The Dutch Feltmakers Association (Viltkontaktgroep) is planning an event to celebrate its 20th anniversary. We would like to invite some feltmakers from abroad, preferably Europe, to give a workshop. We have asked our members to tell us who they think belong to the top 3 of (non-Dutch) feltmakers they would like to attend a workshop by. We invite the IFA members to do the same.

Members can have a link added to the site by sending the link and no more than 50 words to the webmaster (webmaster@feltmakers.com). It's free for members.

The links are in the feltmaking section. The thinking is that people go to that section to find out about feltmaking and then visit the links for inspiration and further contact. The links are sorted by the munber of hits so that the new links are displayed first - we might add sorting options (eg alphabetical) leter.

I have just received this amazing book (Filz Experiment by Annette Quentin-Stoll and Robert Quentin) and was just wondering if anyone knew of an english translation? I know the pictures are very detailed and you can get a very good idea of what is going on from these but I was hoping there might be a translation somewhere.

I hope someone can help.

Hi Sally

It would be great to get the exhibition to Australia and indeed one of the Australian artists in it was hoping to get a grant to cover the cost of travel. That is the big problem - the cost of shipping three crates of work over and then shipping them back again. If you think you might be able to find a sponsor then please do contact me via exhibitions@feltmakers.com and we can discuss it further.

Best wishes

Hello Nicky

I'd just like to reiterate that the IFA logo is for official IFA use only. However, we would be delighted if you would like to add a text link on your site to www.feltmakers.com, where a reciprocal link can be posted to your own site.

This reciprocal arrangement is open to all IFA members.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the reply. I was expecting you to say that - it's why I wanted to check. And it makes total sense. Hope you didn't mind me asking.

See you in April for Frilly scarves,

Hi Nicola
The IFA logo is only used for 'official' business such as representing the association at the various shows like the Knitting and Stitching, Woolfest etc. We also use it for exhibitions such as the Climate is Changing which is now on at the North Light Gallery in Huddersfield. You can always say you are a member of the IFA but without the logo.
All the best

I am wondering if it is possible to get the "Climate is changing" to Australia as an exhibition.
How does this happen? Any advice about getting this to Australia would be great.

We certainly know that the climate is changing in Australia so it is very pertinent.

Topic : Therapeutic benefits of feltmaking and advice for a felting study tour

Hello from Australia
I am a Masters of Art Therapy student. I am in the final stages of completing my thesis on the therapeutic aspects of feltmaking in trauma. I am wondering if anyone has any knowledge out there. I have been in contact with Inge Evers, Ann Marie Stumpf as well as John Lorance (who is an art therapist) in the States.

I am working with children who have experienced trauma through family violence and would like to work with them on constructing small yurts as a metaphor for creating a safe place for themselves. Has anyone made a yurt for one - ie big enough for one child to sit in?

In addition I am applying for a scholarship to research this concept. Does anyone have ideas on what or where I should go. What are the things I should not miss as far as yurt making in
Mongolia (Krzygistan is out of the question for the funding body due to safety concerns so Mongolia is OK), international feltmakers and conferences etc. I have tentatively suggested Mongolia, Holland to visit Inge, Norway to visit Anne Marie, London for IFA and Maine for the yurt foundation. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mary Jane,

generally felt pictures will be hung on a wall and not in a wardrobe or suitcase, if the customer is travelling with the item then a simple grip sealed plastic bag will protect it or securely packed bubble wrap.

other than it shouldn't be a problem, the only other thing I can suggest is that you lightly spray the finished item back and front with a stiffenning srpay that will give it a slightly stiff coating which should be enough to put the moths off.

Hope this helps.

Hi Nicola,

I use Stiffen Stuff Super Quick Stiffening Spray, it stiffens a whole host of things, its no drip and none messy and dries fast, you just need to remeber to hold it a good distance from the object and do light layers and build up to required stiffnes. Instructions come with it on the bottle.

Other ways are to use slightly thicker felt and over felt it and then use the spray.

Natural Uk breads are great for things like bowls as they are naturally coarse and stiffen well. World of wool has a range of died natural breeds so this may be worth trying.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shelly,

you could also look in other craft forums as they have regualr listings for fairs and events, the Crafts Forum is a good one just google the name.

When you get more Established Oakliegh Fairs are also very good but more expensive but you get fantastic locations and great footfall.

With workshops the first think you need to do is to is source a location/venue, these can be church halls community centres and so on... I have a freind who does this sort of thing and is making a good living out of it. You may even be able to run some for local craft shops etc. If you do approch craft shops, go and introduce yourself and take some of your work and examples of the types of classes you can offer. It shows that you are ready to get started and can be availble for bookings.

Hope this helps.

Hi Abbey,

you can certainly needle felt surface embellishment onto a slipper once they are finished and dried. I would never use the tumble dryer on my slippers. Making slippers on a form/slipper last I find is the best way of controlling slippers, once well covered and well felted I put them in the washing machine. If I find that more shrinkage is needed I simply hand felt with more soap and water a bit at a time until I get the right size and then rinse/re-shape and leave to dry.

I hope this has answered your questions.

I haven't used these dyes myself, but in my experience you always get a better uptake of dye on silk, especially where they are in the same bath. You do not give any details about your method, what acids you are using, how much dye etc. The lack of colour on your felt/wool fibres may be down to many things. First, if you are putting both wool and silk in together, the silk will 'grab' a lot of the dye and the remainder may be too weak to giv a strong colour on the wool. Have you tried the wool on its own? You may not have sufficient acid present on the wool - try soaking your wool in a weak acid solution before applying dye. Your wool may not be well-scoured or may have detergent residue which might attract the dye molecules. The wool need to be at a temp of 80oc for a minimum of 20 minutes; silk takes up the dye and fixes much faster. If you are still puzzled try calling Stuart at Kemtex dyes - he knows everything there is to know on the subject and also supplies the dyes I always use.

Hi all,

I have recently done some dyeing with these dyes, but for some reason the colour holds really well on the silk but not on the felt / fibres.

Can anyone tell me how they get on with them if they use them. Or have you got any ideas on the best dyes to use that are bright and colourfast?

I am steaming in a commercial kitchen steamer.

Thanks

Hi Abbey,

I don't know about needle felting a darn. I suppose the only way to find out is to do it. I'm not sure if it would hold unless the original felt was still fairly soft, then you would wet felt the darn in place after you darned it?

I have put slippers in the wash but I made them on a form so the shrinkage was controlled.

Sorry can't help further.

Ellie,
Yes, I suspect a cross-breed, possibly a Leicester of some kind in there. And the official Portland fleece is definitely characteristic of a downs breed.

Not sure about AGM yet.

Absolutely Chris. You can felt unwashed fleece, but it takes longer because you'll need to break down the oils. It can be a filthy job (I live in a pretty peaty area and fleeces can be absolutely filthy), and you won't get the even results you'll get from carded or combed fibres, but depending on your project that can be a good thing. I've washed many, many fleeces in my time. Washing them isn't the problem - getting them dry up here in the wet and windy North Pennines is the difficult part. I use so many fleeces that I have to send them away to be processed otherwise I'd never have time to make anything. The highlights of my year are the deliveries from the mills of my beautifully washed and carded fleeces.

I have to say, when you said that your Portland fleeces were good felters I was a little surprised - they strike me as being rather 'downy' to be an obvious felting choice. You should bring some of your wool along to the AGM (will you be there?) and we could all put our woolly heads together to try to identify it. Perhaps it was a crossbreed?

If you fit their criteria, there's Air through the Artist Network http://www.a-n.co.uk/
Alternatively there's the Craftsman Insurance Scheme http://www.craftinsurance.co.uk/about-us.htm
Neither is expensive.

Having talked about the 'Portland' fleece I thought I had felted successfully, I have just been sent a sample of proper Portland fleece and it is quite different to what I had. I tried t felt the sample but it was very resistant, and after sever minutes of rubbing and rolling, I could pull it all back out. It's a beautiful spinning fleece though, fine and soft. Ha! you might say, hoisted by your own petard. But it just goes to prove the first rule: know your fleece. However, Ellie is quite right in her reply, that you should try some fleece that is not a good felter, so you will have the experience. In fact most wools will felt eventually, through the physical action , but it is then difficult to 'full' or shrink it further and it remains spongy and open, a bit like wadding. After all, if you bought a wool duvet and the wool inside felted with the moisture and movement of your body, you wouldn't be very happy with it, would you?

It still remains a mystery to me what my so-called 'Portland' actually was!

Yes, that is correct - if you can handle the greasy fleece well enough to lay it out as you want it, there is no reason to wash it first. You won't get quite so much control of the thickness of the layers, but this may not be necessary. After all, many of the peoples who make felt for yurt coverings for example would not wash it first.

Does one need to wash fleece prior to felting (provided one is not wanting it dyed and it is free of vegetable matter and not too dirty). I thought that the soap used in the feltmaking process would wash out the lanolin?

Hey Everyone!

I was just wondering if anyone could help with my slipper dilema!?!
Can you darn slippers by needle felting or something? There must be a way! Has anyone got any helpful tips??
Also when using the tumble dryer to finish off slippers as I have heard people do. How do you control the shrinkage effectively?

Cheers
Abbey

There are so many exciting fleece types out there that it's very difficult to select one or two. I use only local fleeces in my own work Having my own hand-picked feltmaking flock is essential to me, but I'm constantly tempted to expand and have very little willpower to resist my woolly companions. It's much easier and more affordable to approach a farmer or two and ask if you can buy fleeces from them. I have several flocks on standby to help with my woolly needs.

Rather than suggest specific breeds, the best advice I can offer is to experiment. Get hold of as many breeds as you can and try them out. Some fleeces definitely felt more quickly and more firmly than others, but this might not be what you want. Try some 'poor' felters to discover exactly what that means. Another thing to consider is that there can be a huge variety within a breed - and here I will give an example. Shetland fleeces - some are absolutely mind-blowingly fabulous, but others will leave you incredibly disappointed.

For any non-IFA members wanting more information on specific breeds, why not join the IFA to read the regular sheep breed feature, among the other fabulous articles in the members only journal? Go on, you know you want to.........

It's possible but it's quite a bit of effort. I hope the addition of the flags makes it easy enough for the moment but here's a promise: If the diary has more than 100 items I'll add a filter.

There was a formatting issue and the boxes into which one types information were not clearly displayed. They are now (you might have to refresh the page - F5 on Windows).

All the best.

The only thing I have managed to change is gender. Does anyone know how to change the other incorrect entries?
Love the new layout and find the new set up much easier to navigate.

Hello,
Just a thought...I wonder if it is possible to have the diary events split with a drop down menu. For example- could we have an option to 'see al'l, 'see UK', 'see Austrailia' etc.
Might be easier for people to find what's going on in their country and perhaps make it easier to use, therfore more traffic?
Thanks

Shelley

It would be great to see details of the up and coming regional workshops in the diary section - I think this is something that would prove popular with members. How about it regional co-ordinators ???

Hi Shelley
I have started selling silk lapps from an Australian supplier. They are dyed in beautiful colours. Contact me if you are interested.

I agree with Nicky, if all regions post them we can see what's available and get to meet some of other other UK colleagues/ friends.

Thank you for the suggestions and caution (I once had a nasty experience when searching for information on the blue footed boobies in Galapagos - isn't it wonderful to be innocent?!).
I am going to try them out, I have some varnish and Sue Pearl suggested diluted pva glue which I have so I'll try that too.
If successful I'll post the results!

Many thanks.

Yes, I have had a look there. It would be good if all region information was there. But as you say I can contact the coordinators directly, and those I have contacted have been really helpful.

Ok I have worked it out! If you click on 'browse' rather than upload it works. Sorry!
