Promoting feltmaking worldwide

Welcome to the website of the International Feltmakers' Association, the organisation established to promote felt in all its forms. The IFA was formed to foster worldwide interest in felt, to promote members' work and keep members in contact with one another for exchange of knowledge and ideas. The organisation is divided into regions that cover the UK, Europe and the rest of the world, making it easy for members to meet like-minded individuals and to attend events near them.

Exhibitions and events

Membership of the IFA enables artists and makers to exhibit their work to an international audience of textile enthusiasts. Our ground-breaking exhibition, 'The Climate Is Changing!', has been touring Europe since spring 2010 and will be coming to UK venues this year. In the past, members have participated in 'Crowning Glory', a show dedicated to hat-making, and 'On the Map', an exhibition that challenged feltmakers to use locally sourced materials in their work. The IFA is profiled at key events nationally in the textile calendar where members demonstrate and show work to the public.

Workshops and talks

Education is one of the main purposes of the IFA, and workshops are held throughout the year: our tutors provide practical information and inspiration for complete beginners, as well as practised feltmakers. Events run by the IFA are highlighted in the Diary section of the website.

Felt Matters

Members receive the quarterly journal, Felt Matters, that showcases the best of contemporary feltmaking. Articles also focus on historical interest and traditional methods of feltmaking and the continuing presence of felt in communities around the globe.
