I have just been reading the Australian Felt magazine and came across an article on the Snowy Creek Roller Felting Machine. Are there any members who have or use this machine as I would like to know more about it regarding its capabilities etc. Hoping someone can help. Regards Chrissie

That geranium leaf tip sounds like a great idea!

It may be entirely incorrect, but my understanding is that vinegar helps close the follicles and smooth the scales of hair/wool. As the surface is smoother it reflects light more, and feels nicer. I have noticed this with my hair and with felt. Over the years (of washing my hair) I have also noticed that if you do the vinegar rinse beofre rinsing the soap out properly, it makes your hair a bit dull and limp...could be the same for wool, but I have not tried this theory out yet.

Maybe the vinegar non-rinsers don't like the smell? If you leave the vinegar on your windowsill in a dark, closed glass bottle for a few weeks and keep replacing geranium leaves, it smells divine!

Only the book list remains missing and it might be a while before this gets reinstated as we can not be convinced of its security. We have posted a simple text list of all the books as an interim.

Topic : Hello!

I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone.
I'm Jenny and I work for World of Wool in the heart of the wool textile industry - Huddersfield.
We provide fibre for felting and spinning enthusiasts like yourselves, and although I'm new to felting, I've joined the IFA so I can learn more about it.
Please feel free to have a look around our web site - we've got some great pictures on there of things people have made with our fibres - and I look forward to learning from all you experienced felters!
Cheers

Topic : Method of mounting felt artwork

Hi

I have pierced the mountboard at regular intervals and stitched lightly without the wool/thread coming through to the front of the felt. The back of the mount is not visible when framed and the work is firmly attached.

I also often use conservation mountboard.

Happy felting

Please could you tell me how I could attach felt pictures to mounting board so that I can frame them under glass. I have pictures of various sizes ranging from 3'x1' to A3 size. Is there a glue or Spray I could use which would be strong enough but will not harm the felt. Some of my pictures are see through in places, others approx. 4/5 mm thick.

All I know is that vinegar in the water used to rinse your hair makes it silky and shiiney and that vinegar in water used to rinse windows makes them shiney and takes away the blears. My guess is that vinegar helps to take out soap and that this would do the same in felt. I did try boiling felt in vinegar but it made no difference at all.

Hi Lesley

When I lived in Rossendale many years ago I visited an industrial archeological site where green baize had been made for covering snooker tables. The vats there were filled with human urine from tea total villagers to finish the cloth which was beaten with heavy wooden 'boots' to soften, full and finish. I don't use urine myself but am a great champion of distilled malt vinegar in weak solution and a meat tenderiser to finish the felt. Whether it's moths or the ph value it works for me!

In my experience feltmakers seem to be either passionate advocates of vinger rinsing or passionately against it. On different workshops I have been told that it is done to neutralise the soap and/or to help prevent moth attack. If that is the case, why are there such differing views of vinegar rinsing?

Topic : Felting Songs

In Scotland 'waulking songs' were sung whilst fulling woven wool and in Celtic Canadian circles songs are sung at 'milling frolics'

In the past I have heard some waulking songes over the internet but can't locate them now. However I just did a quick search and came up with the following - have a look

http://www.siliconglen.com/Scotland/8_2.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waulking_song

happy felting, happy 2010

Hi Lyn

I read your request a while back and keep meaning to get back to you about the idea - it is a great one and I would be very interested if you managed to find any songs. I did however find a tongue twister in one of those funny books that are left by the owners in a holiday house we rented in April and i finally have found it:

Of all the felt i ever felt
I never felt a piece of felt
that felt the way that that felt felt
when first i felt that felt

not much but something

and then that got me thinking about my kids who are at a Waldorf school and how many songs they sing and I started playing around with the tune of row row row your boat but changing the words:

Lay lay lay the wool
carefully in a row
gently tug it into tufts
and cuddle them just so

lay lay lay the wool
now the other way
still I gently tug and lay
but these on top do go

shake shake shake the bottle
wetting down is fun
slippy, slidy, soapy suds
my hands go up and down

roll roll roll the felt
twenty times or more
then unroll, turn it once
and roll it up some more (this verse to be repeated a lot.......!!)

not brilliant poetry and I am not sure what you are doing with them, but i just did those quickly now for you while I was sitting here, so please excuse the rather childlike verse, but i think it may help if it is not too terribly late for the idea and the kids you were working with are still busy with the project... and isn't it just so VERSATILE a tune - it can even be used for needle felting??!!

Good luck and let me know if there is anything else you found.

Warm wishes

I'm working with a group of children on a felting project and wondered if anyone knows any felting songs that might be suitable to sing with them, and where to get them from?

Thanks,

Lyn Jenkins.

Topic : The Loss Of The Site (28th-29th Jan)

The site was unavailable for just over a day between 28th and 29th January and we thought we should explain why.

We discovered a minor security breach and rather than try and find the cause we decided to remove the site immediately and rebuild from scratch - checking components as we went. Obviously the Discussion Board is now reinstated but work is still needed to check the security of the final couple of components: the gallery and the booklist
