Amersfoort

If you want to know a little about Amersfoort before you go, visit:

www.wikitravel.org

www.virtualtourist.com

www.world66.com

http://www.amersfoort.nl/smartsite.shtml?id=51831

Also, http://home.tiscali.nl/~hwels/wandel1e.htm details an interesting short stroll around the town and has a map.

For a map:

www.map24.com allows you to set destinations and starting points to get a map for walking (e.g. from the station to the AGM venue or from your hotel to the AGM venue).Apparently the traffic lights in Amersfoort are the only ones to show a woman rather than a man waiting to cross and crossing the road!!

Staying On?
Amsterdam is always worth a visit.
  • Try the Shirdak Gallery, specializing in Central Asian Textiles, and a lot of felt both traditional and modern!! www.shirdak.nl
  • There is also an exhibition at the Nieuwe Kerk about “Hidden Afghanistan” an exhibition of the artifacts that the director of the Art Museum had hidden from the Taliban!! Very exceptional. www.nieuwekerk.nl
  • Anne Frank museum is walking distance from the central station.  www.annefrank.org
  • Also within walking distance of the central station is Nieuwe Kerk and Shirdak Gallery.

In Amsterdam almost all museums are open on Monday, unlike Utrecht and Amersfoort and the rest of Holland!!

Near Amersfoort is an old fisherman village called Spakenburg, the old people still wear their traditional costume. www.vvvspakenburg.nl

Amersfoort there is the Mondriaan museum  www.mondriaanhuis.nl and the Armando museum  www.armandomuseum.nl , both closed on the Monday but worth a visit on Friday or Saturday maybe.

Utrecht

www.utrecht.nl has info in English. You could try www.centraalmuseum.nl and www.goutrecht.nl

Further afield is...

The Hague, Rotterdam, Delft and Leiden (like Oxford and Cambridge) are all easy to reach by train, all 1 to 1½  hour. Many interesting things to do there as well, but most museums in Holland are closed on Mondays. Nonetheless all interesting old cities/towns.
