Hats: Variation on a Theme with Jorie Johnson

28th to 30th March 2008 (3 days)

If you don’t mind a shape like Mount Fuji or something looking more like a teapot cover than a head topper, you are ok but truly unique yet functional hats with brims can be a real challenge!

In this class we will analyse our personal likes and quandaries about hats while discovering new ideas in the design layering of handmade felt fabric, brim variations, and hat shapes for men, women and children. Our target will be sampling as well as at least one finished hat.

The class will include a important discussion concerning proper finishing techniques, when and why to use stiffeners, and also a slide presentation and demonstration about making original hat blocks. Participants will be asked to bring some of their favourite wools, as well as, work with brim friendly breeds such as Götland and Finnrace. Any odd hat blocks participants wish to try out in class would be a welcomed fun addition, but after all one's own head is the BEST form to use.

Welcome costumers, artists, and mad hatters!

Hours: from 10am till 4pm
Tutor: Jorie Johnson (USA/Japan)
Located at Zijdelings - Kapelstraat 93a Tilburg
Fee: €300 (excluding materials but coffee, tea and lunches are included)

Shifting Shapes: Bird Tail Hat Series with Jorie Johnson

1st to 3rd April 2008 (3 days)

The Bird Tail Hat has been a signature design of the Joi Rae Textiles studio for more than 12 years. It is an adaptable shape, made as a seamless work, wherein the original form is serendipitously shifted to form a multiple tailed form. The base wool, usually of fine merino, is often blended with other fibres such as mink, silver fox, snippets of cotton or linen threads, or simply colour blended for an interesting result in colour gradation. At the studio I generally tie or clamp-resist the final fabric for an interesting over-dyed effect.

During this three-day session we will discuss the general design differences between hats and berets and the “shape shifting” concept, which is the departure point of the workshop. Elements of design theory applied to fine felt fabric making and “the life in after-dyeing,” the study of over-dyeing treatments to enhance, or erase the motif, will be covered. The aim of this class is to teach you how to be spontaneous in your designing while at the same time learning how to control the results at each stage of the process. Participants will design and produce shifted shape hats, witness after-dyeing techniques and have the possibility of over-dyeing their own work as far as time and space allows.

Masterclass: Magic Metal Felt Around The Head with Karin Kortenhorst & Inge Evers

3rd & 4th April 2008

In this 2-days masterclass we will start to investigate wool binding metal and metal binding wool. Where and how do these extreme materials meet? What does shrinkage with wool mean to knitted, braided, crocheted metal? How soft can metal be? Can it be chained and bound by wool? We will investigate unification by making samples and connecting samples. This will lead to finding a personal 3d-element.  On the second day some chosen samples will be furthered into building stones for a magic metal felt hat around your head. The results will be shown during the conference and AGM on 5th & 6th April.

Tutors: Karin Kortenhorst and Inge Evers
Place: Het Kunstbedrijf, Raadhuisstraat 56a, Heemstede (next to Inge Evers' atelier)
